The 55 hours shown for HD record time on 722's is calibrated for mpeg2 recordings. All E*'s HD is in mpeg4. Why haven't they recalibrate it to mpeg4 which should be right about 100 hours? I understand that off air is still mpeg2 but the VAST majority of recordings are mpeg4.

Don't worry, there will always be people like KAB that force the well intentioned or curious away. Valid question.

In fact, try this test.

Record 1 hour of HD from E* then record 1 hour of HD from your OTA tuner.

Then copy both 1 hour programs (they can be the same or different, doesn't matter as what we're talking about is hours). You'll find that the OTA 1 hr is always about twice as large as the Sat 1hr.

That's why I always watch our for my archived programs. If someone comes on the networks then moves to rerun on USA / etc, I'll make note of it. Set the recorder to re-record it and then move it to the EHD and delete the old one. Happens a lot with music concerts / PBS, etc.

I see you understand that already. So the simple answer is Gary's. The majority of the people are not really interested enough to even find this forum. They just plug in a use it.
I'm the neighborhood geek around there that everyone calls whenever their wireless freaks, their PVR is goofing up, they want to add something etc. Works good cause we get lots of offers to watch our dogs when we travel! I can tell you that 95% of everyone I've talked to would prefer the way E* does it cause they would freak out if it said it had 2 hours left and they recorded a show and it erased something old they hadn't watched yet.

See, was it that hard to answer their simple question?

Dish HD uses around 30-45 minutes of the 55 total;OTA uses about 1.25 to 1.5 of the total.

Im sure they set with an avg figure, but these number vary with each program and each channel, its a shot in the dark. A progress meter would be better, that way noone would really know how much time is left, just a percentage.
