As I mentioned last month we enlisted the services of Advally to try helping us raise more ad revenue. We started this project about a month ago.

The ads have been greatly cleaned up opposed to Google just placing them anyplace they want on the site. And while I am happier with the cleaner look, I am saddened to report that the earnings has declined sharply in the month. We are now making about about $1.60 a day with the new ads setup.

We made $23.08 in September, and so far in October we have made $10.88. Surely not enough to pay our bills.

I don't know if I should move us back to the way were were before and off of Advally. That would have us making about 3 times more... but that messes up the look of the site which I hate... and honestly its still not enough to pay our bills.

If I look at our traffic, it is still very good. I can only assume most of the traffic coming in is using ad blockers and thus we earn nothing from that traffic. And while our traffic is good the amount of posts is down. I need to find a way to get more people to engage with the site, as that helps the site all around. There is nothing I can do about ad blockers. In the past I had a message on the screen asking people to please disable their ad blockers but that message only drove people away from the site. And I can't get mad at people using them, I do use one myself.

So I really need to think of an idea for us to raise funds, as while I continue to pay out of pocket to run the site (and am happy to do so) to keep it going, I am fearful of the wife saying enough is enough. And we need to figure out a way to get more people engaged. Yes I understand the Pay TV model is dead or very broken so hard to talk about that stuff when there is nothing new to talk about. Our EV forum is VERY VERY active, however our Pub Members want that to remain a Pub Member only forum.

A few folks have messaged me with idea for new forums, such as a Starlink forum, I would be happy to add it, but I need someone who has the service to moderate it and post items to it to get others engaged. Its hard for me to post things when I don't have the service.

If you have any ideas or want to help out please let me know. And PLEASE put your wallets away for now. I am not asking for money, I am just trying to be honest and give our SatelliteGuys family and honest look of where we are at.

Thanks for being here. :)

Register to hide this ad
Our system works on Usergroups.

Unregistered / Non Logged in is one usergroup.
Registered is another usergroup
Pub Members is another usergroup.

We have things set so that the Unregistered / Non Logged in users see the most ads, not only to help pay the bills but in hope they register for less ads and more importantly participate.

The Registered Usergroup sees ads but not as many at the Unregistered usergroup.

Then Pub Members are set to not see ads at all, which is the best way to use the site as you get the maximum speed from the server, as the loading of ads does slow things down unfortunately.

In an older version of our software there was an option to "opt in" and see the ads if you wanted to, however that feature went away in later updates and probably not many people used it.

A public "Pit" would drive a lot of traffic, but would be a nightmare to maintain.
I will be honest, the Pit is just here to keep our supporters coming back. Its a walled off area that no one sees, unless they want to see it. If we actually enforced the rules we have set for it, everyone (myself included) would probably be banned from it. In the world of politics you definition of what is right will be different then someone else. And honestly that is the beauty of politics. I just wish it wasn't so decisive as it is now.

But i wouldn't make a public pit again (and we had one before) it was funny to see people making a bunch of accounts just so they could argue with themselves or to get their point across better.

We may not always agree on things, but I want to give our supporters a place to get their feelings out. After all in the long run we have known each other for so long that we are like extended family to each other. I don't know many other website where you could say that. So I will say as much as I hate the political fighting it does bring us together at the same time. So I am happy to have that place available for those brave enough to want to be in there. I have said this before but will say it again, I learned a long time ago from my grandmother that opinions are like buttholes, everyone has one. :)

So no public pit. And now you know my reasons why and why we quickly try to del with public political postings as we know how quickly those can turn. And we do have a place where if you want to discuss those things you can.
