Ads Update

Outside the box idea:

Shut down the Pub, migrate all Pub posts to the public forum, make donations optional.

Then you achieve sponsorship + ad revenue

If an incentive is needed for sponsorship, we could brainstorm other ideas..

Moving posts from anywhere behind the pub paywall is surely a nonstarter, especially in bulk.

I'd take your extreme suggestion another direction: shut down new thread creation in the pub - only allow staff to create new posts for say, 2 months. Encourage all other chatter to be done in other parts of the forum during that time. Could go as far as lock popular non-sensitive threads with links to their new public-facing threads in chitchat (ie airline issues, the 19 year old thread that everyone just posts the current weather to, etc). I'd apply this to the EV subforum too - though not sure I'd make a new public section for it until there's regular discussion on topics to warrant it. Keep the safe space for the Tesla bros (the real original purpose for it, including at one point a request that only verified Tesla owners should be able to post there 🤣 ) and new threads for upcoming EVs, charging / chargers, etc shunted elsewhere.

No need to 'lose' the old threads, either. Link to them from their new home for those w/ the paid membership, by all means celebrate what came before... but look forward to the new audience and engagement that can come from there.

The point would be to create new habits. Loosen posting restrictions after a month or two, and see what it does for traffic, ad revenue, etc.

/shrug. I tried with a couple threads, but there's no interest, from staff to supporters, so guess I'll stop outside of the couple I tried.

The trajectory won't change unless everyone wants the change. Seems people would rather rely on wishful thinking and if that doesn't work then they're good w/ the site going away abruptly one day.

As long as this site is married to Satellite TV, the downward trend will continue.

Maybe it is time to create forum areas for all the individual streaming services, instead of lumping them together in one, where information is hard to find.

For example, YTTV, who is now the number 3 provider, has 10 million subscribers, more than DirecTV (over 8 million) and Dish ( about 5 Million Satellite subscribers), both of whom have separate sections here.

Paramount+, almost 80 Million Subscribers, Peacock, over 40 Million, Netflix, over 300 Million, Disney+, over 131 Million, etc, etc.

That is a lot of potential for this site, based on the number of subscribers to those services, then change the current cord cutter forum to General Internet TV Information.
