This, like the Best Buy announcement, is just getting their name out there with the PR, since they're not actually doing anything differently by continuing to sell the products. It's not like Best Buy suddenly pulled their staff off the floor and uptrained them already on Blu-Ray and put the HDDVDs in a corner.
Same goes for Amazon, it's business as usual, just some free press. They'll continue to have their sales, and eventually inventory will dry up and it will be over.

Wheels fallen off? Ummm. That bus was taken out of service altogether a few days ago.
This week is the only time any news agencies would have even picked something like this up.
The goal of any PR dept/agency is to get their company's name in the paper (for something positivie) as much as possible, so they were clearly seizing the moment. If someone prints it, it was worth the effort, and not a bad move in that regard.
