An Mpeg4 replacement of the 50x series?

While it's cool that I will soon be able to get rid of the 50 pound boat anchor known as the 921. I'm wondering how long, or if anyone has heard rumors about a receiver along the lines of the 50x series of DVRs. 1 feed, lower priced DVR. $299 is ok for my main living room receiver, but we have a 50x in the bedroom that the wife uses for all her daytime shows that I want no part of. It's not worth spending a bunch of money to replace it.


Just think when every channel finally HD and SD switches over to MPEG 4 you'll gain a bunch more hours on your DVR harddrive without upgrading it.

It will be a bit longer before the SD receivers will get swapped out.

I get the feeling that we might have seen the last of the new SD only receivers. I could easily see Dish living off the 411/622 from now on. Just keep the 322/625 SD line alive until its run its course.

I give it 12 months to 2 years before they begin swapping out the SD receivers so they can turn off the Mpeg2 and divert the resources to Mpeg4 channels.

I think the ViP series will be the "all serving" STBs from now on. Why not? They still do Mpeg-2 as well as Mpeg-4.

If I read the Charlie Chat correctly, the upgrade from a 50X to a 622 is $299. I'm planning on upgrading both my 501 and my 921 after April 1. My only concern about replacing the 501 (the bedroom box) is FAN NOISE. The 921, for example, is way too noisy for a bedroom. So, I'll be watching the forums for info on how noisy the box is.

As for how long it takes to get an upgrade. There's not that much new compelling HD until late summer when football season starts again. Plenty of time for me. Of course, in LA, I get all of the HD channels OTA, so I'm getting lots of HD.

All future receivers will be in the VIP series and MPEG-4, ethernet, HD & 8PSK capable. Nothing in the Chat said the offers were only for HD receivers. IMHO, a single tuner DVR has gotta be low on the list. Might not be worth making. Once you get used to a 2 tuner DVR, and can watch one/record one at the same time, you see the value.

I have two 942's, a 625 and a 508. When I eventually have to replace the 508 even though I obviously see the value in two tuner boxes, I wouldn't need a fourth two tuner box. I could see people that would choose a cheaper alternative, so hopefully you'll see one when they turn off Mpeg-2.

Seeing how FFA is getting the 322 and 522 receivers eligible for the promotion, this could either mean that they still plan on keeping MPEG-2 around for a little while longer, or want to rid of their current MPEG-2 stock quicker to bring out the MPEG-4 receivers. They will have to work on getting the price down of the MPEG-4 HD receivers though if they want it to be the entry level receiver of the future. I do not think they are comfortable enough with the price of the hardware yet to do that for the nonHD receivers.

Yes. To make it a suitable replacement for the 50x line, the "601" will be everything you asked for -- minus NBR.

I have a 942 in my bedroom virtually noise free, I had a 508 that was nvery quit as well, the 501 I could hear. 721 was is pretty quiet also
