Any monthly cost benefit in purchasing equipment

I saw on the web that you can purchase equipment. After talking to a Dish sales rep it sounded like if I purchased my own equipment then I would have to pay a service fee that is about equal to the rental fee. Is this true.
New customer 120 package with a hopper 3 & joey is $79.99 with leased equipment and sounded like it would cost the same if I purchased the equipment.

What if I lease the hopper 3 can I add Joeys my self without a service fee?
What about adding the usb OTA adapter.

I need a min of 2 TVs but if I can purchase Joeys my self and connect without an activation & service fees I would add more TVs. I also want to connect to the USB over the air

Monthly cost is same either buying or leasing. Only benefit to buying is you can turn on/off service for that receiver without having to send unit back.

Nope, they stopped that years ago. It's the same cost now whether you lease OR own. There's no real difference or savings, except if you own, you don't get any discounts for the first 2 years since you technically don't have a contract.

Some states have a leased receiver tax (mine does) so obviously you wouldn't have to pay that if you owned your equipment.

If you buy an OTA adapter you can plug it in and use it without any charges or activation fee.

Another benefit I think is by buying you don't incur the 2 year commitment.

The biggest advantage to buying rather than leasing is you get to lighten your wallet. That way you don't get a sore butt from sitting on all that cash.

Since I enjoy doing my own work, owning is the only way I would go. But that is in my case. I install my own dishes, repair them, etc. No charges to incur that way. Plus if I decide I want to move a dish to a different bird, or install a second one, which I have done, I don't have to deal with Dish or an installer. I just do it. If I want to activate programming on a bird, all I do is to call. But that is not for everyone. I don't believe in leasing if I do not have to. I prefer to own. I have been with Dish now for 20 years and changed out a lot of dishes and a couple receivers.

There is no monthly rental fee. There is an active outlet fee. You pay based on capability, not on renting or owning.

I have always owed all of my receivers and dish's and lnb and switch's . It's more of a hobby to me. If I want something different for my set up I just buy it.

Back when we first wanted Dish for our then part-time RV, I couldn't find a dealer in my area that would do an RV install. Since I had experience installing C-band dishes and receivers, I bought a Dish VIP211K from Solid Signal, a 1K4 dish with both EA and WA LNB's and a basic roof mount tripod on eBay for portable use, and activated the 211K through Dish4MyRV on the "pay-as-you-go" FLEX plan. Later on, I upgraded the 211K to a purchased Hopper w/Sling. The lesser featured 211z was the current single tuner receiver by then and the 211K's were in some demand, so I sold ours on eBay for about $45 less than I paid for the H2. Then the price of the TWC cable service we had for the house kept going up, so we decided it didn't make sense to have both services. I bought another H2 and Joey for the house, along with a used 1K4 and EA LNB with a permanent mount. Since then, we've sold the house and gone on to fulltime RV'ing, but we did keep a small family cottage in the southern Adirondacks, so that's where the "house" H2 and Joey now live. And we're still on the "RV Outdoors" pay-as-you-go plan. We never shut the plan down now of course.

I agree there's no real benefit to purchase for conventional use. And no, we don't turn anything off although we easily could. Our two daughters and grandkids often use the cottage, plus we fairly often stream from the H2 there with Dish Anywhere. The cottage usually loses the locals as we switch of course, but this winter when we were getting the Jacksonville, FL locals for a month or so, our family got a kick out of seeing them in the NY cottage. Jacksonville is CONUS beamed on the EA 77 sat.

I own because it saves me the $3 in taxes each month and because I can sell my receivers on Ebay when I upgrade. Dish gave me my current receiver outright. So why not take the deal if it's offered?

PS- I also own my cell phone and my daughter's phone as well. I pay cash for them. iPhones have an amazing resale value.

There's nothing wrong with owning your equipment and as I mentioned previously most newer Dish receivers have a decent resale value.

Yep, I found that out when I sold my used 211K for not a lot less than I paid for a new H2...

"Incur" the 2 year commitment? Many on here, including myself, seek out that 2 year commitment every two years to lock in discounts and prices. I own my equipment and pretty much stay on contract continuously by choice.

I am the same way. I am a DISH lifer for ever. Screw ATT and streaming.

I gather some would want a two year guarantee from Dish that they will provide service that long!

The bleeding hasn't stopped, but as OTT gets more expensive, the convenience of an EPG and trick plays and genuine DVRs will lure some back.
