It's time for my wife to get a new iphone as her iphone 12 is getting weak battery life test says 70% compared to when new. But it is beginning to show signs of screen freezing as well.

I am trying to decide for myself as well. I have a 2nd generation iPhone SE that I bought in May 2020. It has a cracked screen and after almost 5 1/2 years, the battery life isn't what it should be. I am not a heavy new feature person, so part of me wonders if it makes more sense for me to get an iPhone 16 model - the price of those I think will go down slightly once the 17 comes out. But does it make more sense to just get the 17? I am not sure... I wish they didn't discontinue the SE line. I really like my iPhone SE.

My 15 PM works fine. My wife had to upgrade from her old SE to a 13. I don't remember the details, but something wouldn't work on the SE. I gave her mother my Xspm and bought the 15pm. Shortly thereafter, we had to buy HER a 13, as prior iPhones wouldn't work with some s/w her facility installed. And required. And STILL isn't full featured.

Now I have my old phone back, with a new battery and no use.

Sigh.

My wife had the SE too but it didn't hold up well so she bought the 12 mini when it came out.. Much faster.

Since you are not a power all user the 16 will be a really good upgrade and I would just decide on the 17 if the price difference is small. For us the 12 mini shows an estimated $100 trade in discount.

There are plenty of YT videos now that cover what will be available on the 17.

On affording an upgrade, I have been just financing Apple stuff with the Apple card, then pay monthly. This also gives you a 3% Apple card discount on the monthly payments. Normally I don't like carrying a CC balance but the Apple card so far hasn't charged any interest on Apple products. Just pay the balance due each month.

Love my 15 PM with 528GB storage. I shoot quite a bit of 3D video with it and it has worked great. View the Apple spatial 3D video on Meta Quest 3.
My history with iphone has been 5 years of use. Bought iphone 6, 10PM, then 15PM and I'll probably wait as there isn't anything I see in the 17PM that excites me. The 8X zoom looks nice but that isn't enough for me to upgrade from my 15PM.

I have the same iPhone SE 2nd gen. Same issue with battery life. Have you looked at the 16e? I have been considering it. It is sort of like the SE models only it has the larger screen. Priced at $599. Apple 16e

And just to add to this post in case there is anyone that doesn't know...Apple offers veterans a 10% discount on all purchases.

I typically get a new one each year through Apple's Upgrade Program. Have not bothered to keep up with the rumors for what is coming this time. We should know in a couple weeks.

IIRC you have to be locked to one of the "Big 3" carriers during the entire financing period. Not sure if that's still true or not.
Don't know. But I'm OK with Verizon. It was a chore when I traded in my wife's old AW for a knew one this year. The lady at Apple store did the transfer and setup in about 30 minutes in the store. But when I checked our Verizon account, I saw we now were being billed for two AW phone numbers as the old phone number was not removed from the Verizon account. It was a bit of a chore to get the old AW number tied to my wife's iphone and delete the new number the Apple Store lady put on the new watch. If the numbers aren't the same, then all my 3rd party accounts that use 2FA etc on a phone number would need to be updated too.

So I've been debating if it might be better to purchase the new iphone 17 at the Verizon store. Or, just order on line and do it all myself. When I updated my iphone and Apple watch, I recall it was a project that took almost a day doing both.

I can't imagine the trouble caused by switching carriers.

On the rumor of iphone 17 there is a new much thinner model but if you are concerned about battery lasting all day, I would avoid this extra thin iphone. I suspect this super thin iphone will be another Apple flop. Plus thinner will likely get bent easier as so many people stuff their phones in a back pocket and then sit on them. Plus more bad news- Apple is rumored to be switching from Titanium case to Aluminum; cheaper softer and easier to bend. My 15Pro Max is Titanium and tough as nails. Same for my AW Ultra.

As long as your phone is unlocked, it's actually very easy. And it also enables you to have two different phone numbers for two different carriers if you like. That's what I do here in New Mexico.
Thanks but I have no need for that. Life is complicated enough much less having to track more phone numbers. LOL! Double the spam?

I'm not really using the second phone number, it's a $10 unlimited data plan on T-Mobile. I use that data here in the Albuquerque area because that's the best network in the area. My main number is still on the Verizon network.
