Anyone planning to buy the iphone 17?

Don, watching Alex Lindsey from 090.media, he was saying the iPhone 17 Pro will have the ability to record Time Code and Genlock to other cameras if your production needs require it. He, too, was disappointed that nothing was done (or said) with Spatial Video.

Who here has the Apple Care?

I have it. It costs me $11.49 per month for my iPhone 16. Since I pay cash for my phones it makes sense since I would be out of pocket for any damage or loss not covered by warranty.

I've kind of grown out of the annual tech upgrade cycle so I'm going to pass on this year's lineup. My iPhone 15 Pro Max still works fine for me so it'll hang around awhile longer. Prior to that I was using the 6S Plus. I just don't use my phone enough to really justify spending the $ to upgrade every year.

I primarily rely on my PC and iPad, but even those don't get upgraded very often anymore. The past two iPad upgrades have come because I used the previous ones so long the charging ports physically broke and wouldn't charge anymore.

I do find the translation feature on the AirPods very cool, and I can see where that would occasionally come in handy but I'm not a fan of the "Pro" earpiece style with the rubber tips, etc. I prefer the traditional AirPod earpiece style. Hopefully that feature will eventually make it down the line to the regular ones.

16 Pro Max still working fine, I listened to the presentation but did not hear any mention of whether the spatial / 3D (which I have used a grand total of two or three times but still think is a great thing) is still a supported feature in any of these new devices. We typically only get the even-numbered editions, not intentionally that's just the way it's worked out.

And regarding carriers, I always buy unlocked and my carrier is US Mobile. I have two eSIMs, one on Verizon "Warp" and one on ATT "Dark Star" and if I'm ever in an area where one of them has zero signal, data usage swaps automagically to the other. We don't need overpriced unlimited data, 10GB shared between our two iPhones, (mine with 2 sims) plus three no-data devices is $60/month.

We are, however, going to be getting the new Watch 11. We have series 6 now, the batteries are shot and best I can determine, far less hassle to upgrade than try to replace the batteries.

I wonder if the translation feature may ultimately work with other noise-cancelling listening devices. Most of the heavy lifting is doubtless happening in the phone and online.

When I was in the business I did production with 3 and sometimes 4 cameras genlocked with time code. Those were all broadcast level cameras. While the iphone genlock feature is fascinating, today, I shoot mostly multicameras with dji and insta 360's I had to go back to film days using the clap board method to sync the run start but as I explained some time ago long clips can drift. Anyway, I don't see a need for that anymore in my future.

I had a discussion with my wife about shooting 3D spatial photos and videos of the grandkids with the 17P in the future. She had the impression that if she shot 3D it would not be useful in 2D. I assured her that the Apple spatial method is compatible with 2D and only visible in 3D with special devices like Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3 HMD's. I recommend shooting all basic images and video with spatial 3D since it will be available if desired. There is also a clip-on lens to view spatial 3D on the iphone after using a special app to make the image side by side 3D on the iphone screen.

Set up for pre-order on Friday. 17 Pro 256GB Deep Blue. I think it is supposed to deliver on the 19th.
Wife wants orange 17P. We will take advantage of the 3% discount for using Apple card. Comes to $41.67 per month for 2 years + STax. It looks like no delivery, have to pick up in the store for us. Apple store is just 8 miles from the house so no big deal. Just have to deal with the crowds.

She viewed the Apple event last night and liked the idea of the dual camera, front and main recording.

If you have a 16P I don't see enough difference to justify the upgrade to a 17P. But some just want to have the latest. I have a 15PM with 512GB and it's working just fine although the faster modem to connect is interesting.

My wife just got the AW10 in April because her old AW4 finally would not hold a charge. Stopped working while we were on a cruise. I want to see what the trade up price would be to get the new 11. Our interest is in the new hypertension detection but not sure that is going to be active out of the box. They did say this month for FDA approval. I don't need it as my BP is 110-120 SP but she takes medication for hypertension and this feature would be beneficial if it works as claimed. This uses a new technology for monitoring, not the wrist cuff system which is known to be inaccurate.

I was surprised that the 17 Pro went back to an Aluminum space frame instead of Titanium.
I was surprised too but they explained it in the event video. Thermal management. However, I suspect it also had to do with holding the cost down on the Pro series. The new slim needed the added strength of the Titanium but the slim doesn't do spatial video that does generate more heat. My 15PM gets hot in my hand when shooting spatial video for more than 15 minutes. I use a holder. I shot some 3D of the performances on a cruise that were 45 minutes long and had to use a selfie stick due to the heat.

Just compared the AW10 my wife has with AW11 and the only thing different that is meaningful is the 11 has 5G cellular. the 10 is only LTE. Both are equipped with hypertension monitoring that needs a software update yet. So no need for us to upgrade the 10 to 11.

Remember when analog cell was replaced by digital? People were losing their minds over being "forced" to replace their phones.

far less hassle to upgrade than try to replace the batteries.

When I dropped off my XSProMaxWhatever for a new battery, it only took about an hour. I then gave it to my MiL to replace an older phone. Just before we learned she HAD to have a more recent model to be compatible with new s/w at the facility when she lives. Total waste of money. Sigh.

Watching "Office Hours" Q&A (officehours.global) and one of the panelists had the idea of using two iPhone 17P with Genlock docks with the lenses set to the interocular distance (one phone flipped) which would allows the use of the same 48 MP sensor for both eyes. Obviously you would need a cage that allow mounting both iPhones plus the two docks and power. Definitely not a casual "let's pack the Pelican for the cruise" and using as a tourist camera.

My iPhone 13 is coming up on four years since I purchased it. Apple has already limited the iPhone 16 models to remove the Plus variant and the larger storage options (only 128 GB available) for $100 off last year's price. However, for the additional $100, not only do you get double the storage, you also get the 48 MP cameras, 18 MP front camera, slightly bigger and brighter screen, 120 Hz refresh, newer Wireless chip (N1), A19 vs. A18, better battery life, stronger glass, etc.

Apple will knock off $200 for trading in my iPhone 13, so it seems like an upgrade to the 17 is in the cards…

Anyone getting the Z fold 7
