New member, awesome forum!

Apologies for length, but this story must be told in hopes of getting some help. I also posted a similar thread in the Dish forum, I hope that is OK, I just would like a Directv perspective since I may be switching from Dish and need to know if Directv can accommodate me.

I have only been a dish customer for the past 9 months (15 year former comcast customer who never registered any complaint) but have become increasingly frustrated with my Dish account as we move into the digital age. Let me preface that I am not trying to bash Dish or Directv, my Dish service has been, for the most part, enjoyable if perhaps a little expensive (more on that in a moment). I just want a service that can meet my needs, which I feel are becoming more standard every day as HD becomes common place and I wonder if Directv would be more accommodating.

Please let me explain my dilema.

When we built our new home last year, we initially only really needed 2 HD signals, so we were provided 2 HD Duo DVRs (777 series and 222 series I believe) that gave us 2 HD signals and two "wireless" SD signals. I really did not research Dish vs. Directv and was with Dish because they were coupled as a package offering from my DSL 10mbps carrier (formerly Embarq, now Centurylink). Now that we are moved in and have a finished basement, rec room and a separate theatre room, we really NEED 5 HD signals. So I made a call to Dish yesterday thinking no problem, I will just get a few more receivers, increase my bill and be on my way. Boy was I mistaken.

Unfortunately, Dish has informed me that they have a standing policy to not lease more than 3 boxes to any household. This limitation is very frustrating as I have a need for A MINIMUM of 5 rooms in HD. Even with 3 HD DVR Duos, I only get 3 HD signals. I politely told the CSR that I would gladly trade in the DVRs and just take 5 base HD receivers taking the DVR hit but again was stonewalled. They did tell me however, that I could "semi purchase" new 922 models for... get this... $400 EACH AND a $17 dollar EACH per month charge AND I "own" them but only for the life of my subscription (meaning that if I leave, they are really not mine)!

No thanks...

The CSR was actually pretty understanding, polite and actually said that they have gotten a lot of calls like. She also said she would send me to the "loyalty" department where they might be able to help me. Great! I am then transferred and was immediately greeted by the most arrogant, condesending woman I have ever spoken to on a customer service call (I have her name and OPID) who basically told me that nothing could be done and actually questioned why anyone would "NEED" 5 HD signals when I have the Duos SD!

In 2010? Really?

Am I crazy for wanting 5 of my 7 60"+ or projector rooms to display At LEAST 720p? Really?

Anyway she was quick to let me cancel and of course informed me that I would be hit with the early service termination ($210), $15 shipping charge per DVR/remote and that I would need to have those back in 30 days or I would be charged MSRP for those boxes.

Now that is customer service!

It is important to note that I called in that morning with no issue and with ZERO intention to leave the service, but the sheer lack of flexibility (I was not offered a single dollar discount on anything in an effort to save my account) and arrogance by this "supervisor" left me with no options. I might also add that I had the America's Top 250 package, full sports package with Redzone and paid $112 a month for that plus the 2 DVRs which I am finding out was not a "great deal".

I have spoken briefly with Directv and they seem much more flexible in that they can give me 5 HD units with whole home DVR for $300 (2 HD free, paying $99 each x 3 for remaining) and then only charge me $5 a month for the 3 additional units (as opposed to Dish charging upwards of $400 each and $17 monthly charge each). They also seem to have better pricing on packages (from the $112 I am paying currently).

So what I need to know are the following:

1. Am I off base asking for 5 HD signals in 2010? Maybe I am wrong and this is an odd request.
2. Does anyone have a Directv solution with 5 HD signals? If so, how did you do it with Directv and how much do you pay?
3. Does anyone have any experience in getting NFL Redzone without Sunday Ticket?
4. If no to 3... whats the best deal I can get on Sunday Ticket? $314 seems outlandish when Redzone is what I would watch most of the time.

Assistance is appreciated.

You can get your 5 boxes from D*, my suggestion is to get ALL the recvrs you THINK you may need right away as you'll get the best deals while your a NEW sub.
Are you interested in the ST at all ? Now is the time to take advantage of the GREAT deal they have every year when ordering the ST.

You pay like $ 70 p/m and get the ST as well as the Top programming package for FREE for 4-5 months (I haven't looked at the offer this year yet). Someone was mentioning the other day that they are starting this early this year, usually it's not available till July or August.

From what I understand,D*"s Red Zone is different from those that other providers have and I don't think you can order it separately.

Others pop in if the Red Zone info is incorrect, as I hardly ever watch the Red Zone Channel, other love it, I find it bouncing around too much, like every other play.
I prefer to watch MY GAME and when mines not on, find another interesting game.

I love being able to catch the ends of the ST games when alot are coming down to the end and watch them instead of jumping from game to game, I have no interest in.

1. WELCOME.

1a. Not at all an odd request, Dish is very tough to deal with when it comes to equipment.

2. I have 5 HD-DVRs, I pay $81 per month plus $5 per each extra receiver plus whatever premiums and sports I have. $81 is Choice Xtra with HD and DVR fee. New customers get HD free, so you can expect your "regular price" without discounts would be $71 plus $5 for all boxes after the first.

3. Not yet. Previous years it required NFL & Superfan. This year superfan is eliminated, so NFL is just $300 (did I just say it was "just" $300 :( ) No word if DirecTV will offer RedZone seperate yet.

4. The new customer promo for NFL is to pay $60-$70 for 5 months for NFL and you get the Premier package free for those five months. Generally is their best promo of the year, given Premier runs upwards of $110/mo. Referral will save you another $100.

All DirecTV equip is leased, so when you leave you have to return it (though they don't charge you $15 shipping like dish, it's free). Nothing even close the the $17/receiver fees dish has for some of their HD DVRs. All DirecTV receivers are designed for one TV, they don't do any of the two TV type receivers that Dish does.

Your first HD-DVR and HD receiver is free. Extra HD-DVR is $199, extra HD receivers is $99. The Whole Home DVR ($3/mo extra) lets you watch things from the DVR in any room with an HD receiver, and works very good. They do the networking over the single coax wire to each receiver, the installer will set it up. Also for $25 they will connect to your router for on demand, which is worth it. DirecTV has a good VOD system and it is growing.

Feel free to fire any more questions.

This sounds like it might be worth the Dish termination fee to make the switch!

So if I understand correctly, I would get the following:

1. First HD DVR and First HD Receiver FREE

2. I would pay $99 x 3 for HD receivers 3,4 and 5.

3. I would pay $3 a month for whole home DVR so each set would have DVR capability.

4. I would get ST and RZ plus premium channels for $60 or $70 per month for 5 months and $110 a month after.

Sounds good... a few questions:

1. Does ST auto renew or do I order it each year?

2. Will installation be free?

3. Will whole home DVR provide HD 1080i/p to EACH room? Coax wont do 1080 so that seems dubious.

4. How do I get the referral discount? Do not know anyone on Directv.

5. So would I pay $15 a month extra for the 3 new HD Receivers or do I pay $25 (2 free plus 3 x $5 each)?

6. I would like to understand what my TOTAL monthly bill would be (approximate).

Thanks for the help... sounds like I am switching. Will cost $500 with the Dish termination fee, but we all pay for mistakes :p

Also, D* is different in thier billing as when you get a DVR, there is a DVR FEE, don't remember,I think it's $ 7 p/m, but unlike dish, when you get your next DVR, your already paid on the DVR fee , 1 fee for as many DVR's you have, instead of a fee for each recvr.

1. It auto renews, you can cancel up to the first day of the season. Opening kickoff and you are locked in.
2. Yes, free install excluding any custom work you ask for (rare).
3. Yes, it is sent digitally to the other HD receiver, 720p or 1080i, either way.
4. See this thread, or PM me. http://www.satelliteguys.us/directv-forum/171751-new-improved-directv-referral-offer.html
5. You would pay $20/month. The first receiver is free each month, all others $5/mo. The second free HD receiver is waiving the $99 up front fee, not the $5 monthly fee.
6. $70 programming (NFL), $20 extra receivers, $7 DVR fee, $3 Whole Home DVR Fee. $100 plus taxes by my estimate.
After 5 months, $71 for Choice Extra plus the $30 above. Or $110 for Premier plus the $30 above. I usually keep Choice Extra and just add a premium or two based on the promos they are running. Several times a year they have buy-1-get-1 on premiums, like Buy HBO get free MAX for 3 months, or buy Starz get free Showtime. Also sometimes there are rebates too, like $25 if you have Showtime for 3 months. Because of this I don't keep the Premier pack, just take advantage of the promos and fill my DVR.

They may be willing to help with the termination fee, you can ask when you call. Sometimes they have a bit of room to work there.

I made the switch... how did I do?

First, thanks to a member I got a referral and a discount which only made my deal sweeter and my switch easier.

My Dish experience has shown that they really took advantage of my wallet, albeit through my own fault in just trusting what a CSR told me (best value, you got a good deal, great time to join Dish, we are across board a better value than cable or Directv, et al).

I was previous paying $112.99 for America's Top 250, 2 HD units, multisport package and a lot of service and HD fees.

My New Directv Plan

1 HR-24 HD DVR Receiver
4 HD Receivers
NFL Sunday Ticket w/ Redzone (normally $314.00)
Premier Programming Package (normally 114.99/mo)
HD For Life
Whole Home DVR for 5 HD rooms
Protection Plan (no charge for service calls)

Cost months 1-5: 89.99 - 10.00 referral discount
Cost months 6-12: 96.99 - 10.00 referral discount (up to month 10)
Cost months 13 forward: 120.99 (no penalty to downgrade to Choice Ultimate which I will do since I have netflix)

Install for 5 rooms included
Setup for VOD to DSL included

Promised in writing that there will be no hidden charges beyond taxes.

To be fair, I did have to pay $297 up front for 3 HD receivers and I went ahead and ate the early termination fee from Dish of $195 plus the $15 shipping per unit back to Dish (which Directv does not charge upon cancellation). Tough pill but glad to put it behind me.

I think I did well... did I? :D:confused:

If you are happier now than you were before you have made the right choice for you. In the end, that is what matters. This is why we have choices.

Congrats and welcome!
:up

While the receivers can obviously all show live content from the satellite feeds, keep in mind that the DVR can only stream to one other receiver at a time. Knowing this, you might want to adjust your order to have a couple DVRs.

So in effect I can stream from the DVR and to another receiver at the same time, effectively giving me two streams (with one required to be at the DVR) correct?

If so, that is acceptable. :up

Dish sort of revised this. There is only 1 DVR fee per account now regardless of the number of DVRs.

Of course, the lease fee for DVR equipment is higher than non-DVR equipment so it's not really a subscriber win on the bottom line.

I had heard that DISH finally did this, how much do they charge for thier DVR fee now ?

Is this true even if you have the whole house viewing option with the proper HD receivers at each set? Just about ready to pull the trigger on a switch to DirectTV from Dish but this is making me reconsider.

Each DVR can feed 1 remote receiver at a time. I wouldn't let this hold you back -- the DVR fee is per account so if you add a 2nd or 3rd DVR your monthly fee doesn't change vs if you just added non-DVR HD receivers. (it's $5 per receiver whether it's a DVR or not) Obviously your start-up costs will be a bit higher, but having more recording tuners also makes it easier to split recordings out so you don't have to worry about recordings getting skipped due to conflicts.

I can verify this... after reading about this minor limitation I went ahead and called Directv and added a second HD DVR. So I now will have 2 HD DVRs and 3 HD receivers with whole home service.

Simply could not do this with Dish without paying literally double the monthly fees. Dish service is not bad, but their pricing and policies are. Paying up to $17 per month per unit (on top of up front costs) is almost criminal.

I know that I'm spending your money but I would add a 2nd DVR into the mix replacing one of the HD receivers. That would give you a lot more recording ability and a lot of flexibility for viewing.

Should I Be Concerned - Can a Directv Sub / Expert Review This?

I recently switched from Dish to Directv (install on July 9)

However I have received a total of 3 separate PMs from members on these forums who have said that my new Directv service on order is either:

1) Not accruate i.e. too good to be true
2) That I will get hit with hidden charges
3) That once the first promo period is over I will get slammed with new charges.

All 3 members have told me to cancel while I can or I will regret it. However it seems like I struck a good deal (if its accurate). So can a knowledgable Directv customer or support person (stonecold?) verify that I am not missing something here?

I have until July 9 to cancel/change this order.

First here is what I was TOLD and wrote down (verified 4 times to the point the CSR was giggling at my skeptical nature... in a good way).

2 HD DVRs
3 HD Receivers
Sunday Ticket Package
Premiere Programming Package
HD for Life
Whole Home DVR Service
Protection Plan
DSL to VOD install
5 room Install

Price:

First I did pay a shade over $400 up from for the extra HD DVR and 2 extra HD receivers (5 total units with the 2 free they gave me).

1-5 months: 89.99 + 6.00 protection plan = 95.99 - 10.00 referral = 85.99

6-12 months: 96.99 + 6.00 protection plan = 102.99 - 10.00 referral = 92.99 (up to month 10 then 102.99 for months 11 and 12)

13+ months: 120.99 + 6.00 protection = $126.99

No charge for HD for life

No charge for DVR lease fees (well he said it is not structured as free but is built into the above pricing so effectively waived, but was clear to say it is technically still there).

Whole home DVR is included in the above price.

Here is the order email data I got from DTV:

YOUR PROGRAMMING SELECTION, SPECIAL OFFERS AND SERVICES

Leased Receiver $20.00

NFL SUNDAY TICKET 2010 $59.99

DIRECTV Whole-Home DVR Service $3.00

DIRECTV on DEMAND $0.00

spacer.gif

Free HD Access for Life $10.00
spacer.gif

Refer a Friend $10.00

Estimated First Bill Amount$79.99

So should I be concerned with any gotchas? The structure of this email does look a lot different than the notes I took, but the CSR just kept telling me its all in the structure but assured me MULTIPLE times that my pricing would be as above.

Also the total estimate from the email, while CHEAPER than what I was told is still inaccurate so that gives me pause!

I also asked several times about any hidden charges and he said only taxes would not be included in these totals (even confirmed that with a supervisor named Nathan) :up

Thanks for any feedback!
