IMSA at Watkins Glen. Really nice race. Heinrich is a rising beast. Rexy penalized out of the top three. Callum Illot managed a second place finish when the pit strategy lines up perfectly with circumstance.

Mid-Ohio next week. Temps this week in Ohio (and other places) are going to be HOT! Gonna cool off, but while Mid-Ohio for Indy is usually a hot slog, temps peaking above 90 all three days is the forecast. Storms are currently 40% chance. The one problem with Mid-Ohio is that the on-site campers get first dibs everyday, so they take the limited shade spots. Not a lot of spots to view the track from the shade. Thunder Valley is one, but it isn't the most fun portion of racing to see. It will be a slog, having to show up early for car shade!

What a week or so. Dixon and Rosenquist to Arrow McLaren. This means Lungaard and Siegel are out. Lungaard from my understanding might be an engineering thing where he is a great driver, but he isn't as good with the communicating the better car setup needs with the crew. Siegel appeared to be rocketing to the top, performing very well in NXT and winning LMP2 at LeMans, but that has not transitioned anywhere near success in Indycar. Armstrong to stay with MSR. Sting Ray Robb almost certainly out of a ride. Unlike Conor Daly, who is good at ovals, Veekay is showing what can be accomplished with a Dale Coyne and JHC car, and Robb can't measure up at all. MSR or JHC could possibly work for Veekay, but JHC would need money.... see available driver Siegel (who unlike Robb, has a class LeMans win).

Mid-Ohio Indy Great Bake (Broil?) Off 2026

Friday - Got to the track early-ish as I wanted to try and sneak my car into a premium spot overlooking down the track past the Essess Curves. It is hot! Temps nearing mid-90s, Heat Index above 100 degrees. The covered pavilion that usually has corporate rentals is open! The day wasn't too eventful. Some spins in the USF levels race(s). Indy gets on the track. We are exhausted. Veekay performs top 10 for the day! There was a closed practice earlier in the season, so that might have something to do with it. Siegel is just under Veekay, and he has been practicing well-ish, but not racing well-ish. Power, Palou, Lungaard are at the top.

Saturday - The races were interesting. A good deal of localized passing in the lower USF event we watched from the grandstands while it wasn't broasting hot yet. The pavilion remained open providing some shelter from the sun. Also, allowing unfettered access to Turn One for watching and photography. Fitipaldi won the first NXT event. No... his grandson. Qualifying for Indy was then about ready to start. But the clouds got very dark, winds started picking up, rain began storming to the ground, lightning strikes blasting thunder in the air. Not where we were, it just kind of showered a little, instead the storm was about 6 to 10 miles south of us, and regs say lightning within 8 miles starts a 30 minute clock to reopen the track. Supposed to start at 2:30. It is now 4:15, but over the radio Race Control says 4:45 get moving. And at roughly 4:30, the inclement weather warning pops up again. They have extended to 5:12 (5:17?). My daughter is done with the heat for the day. And qualifying is starting to look less likely. Another delay to 5:30 or so. Time to pack it up.

Get to the hotel, and turn on FS1 just in case and they are qualifying. *BLEEP!* But at least we can watch it. Fast Six are Lungaard, Malukas, O'Ward, Veekay, Rasmussen, and Power! That'd be 5 teams represented among the Fast Six.

Sunday - The storm helped kick the temperature down (or the temperature went down because the heat dome weakened which allowed the storm would be more accurate). We do our typical stop and drop to get our "spot". Did some walking about, trying to find some drivers. We do the grid walk, first time for us doing that. Get lunch, get to our seats, lets get racing. There are two key moments of the race. The first one is Veekay clinically moving up two spots from 6th to 4th into the Essess and holding it. There will be two strategies, drivers on blacks and drivers on alternates. Veekay was first in the alternates strategy. The alternates start pitting around ten laps which split up the race. It'd take a while to find out. Once the first full pit sequence was done, it was O'Ward, Lungaard, Veekay, Kirkwood. Malakus was up in third, but Penske, not JHC had a hiccup in the pits. This also meant Veekay had legit speed! Then at lap 40, my daughter's prescripted time to get a smoothie because there had been no yellows yet, we go to get the smoothie at the nearby truth. We order, have it prepared, served, and paid for. That probably isn't as interesting as the dual between O'Ward and Lungaard that we missed during that time that moved O'Ward up to first. Final pit sequences happen and JHC is just a tad slow enough that the Andretti crew can help get Kirkwood out in front of Veekay for a podium spot. Without a restart, Veekay would be stuck in fourth, but still a remarkable finish. During the Grid Walk I did ask his crew if they were getting him to the podium today. So close!

Was able to gets of daughter with Malukas and Armstrong (who we really kind of forced, politely), Rahal (Graham), some Dutch driver I hadn't heard of named Rinus van Kalmthout, Jacob Abel because we noticed him and why not, and Rasmussen. Most dramatically I met my first celebrity during the Pit Walk, Lambchop. Got a pick of her and some random guy that had his hand up her butt, not certain what that was about, but I'm not judging. Food truck options increased and for the good.

Really hoping that Denny Hamlin wins the championship this year.

Netscape wasn't really known for its search engine (since it technically aggregated hits from others).

For years (after Marc Andreessen sold Netscape to AOL), it was a front for AOL Search, and now it is a front for Bing, where search goes to die.

Portland does as Portland does. One short yellow, green the rest of the way. Turn One at the start ended up being really clean. Friday was baking and the alternate tires were falling apart, but lower temps over the weekend led to the reds managing the track better. Not much passing. The straddling of the reds and blacks helped an other just fast cars driving race have a bit more drama.

Qualifying was interesting. Dale Coyne saw both cars get out to the second round and Veekay, who'd been near the top in practice also followed through. Grosjean would suffer some bad luck as his team apparently was short a set of rims, which meant he had no sticker set of reds for the Round of12. He wasn't pleased. It was odd as Coyne's cars weren't showing any pace in practice, but things were righted by qualifying. Veekay would get into the fast six, along with Palou, Rosenquist, Kirkwood, and Power. Rosenquist nudged Palou out of the pole position by 0.02 seconds.

Ultimately, this is about how the race finished as well. Veekay slipped back to sixth after a couple pitstops, but the final stop saw JHR get Veekay released before Kirkwood and Ericsson and finish in 4th, a repeat of Mid-Ohio's outcome. Kirkwood needed to pit early with a tire going down, which likely meant a tad more fuel needed in the stop. Palou's stint on reds was insane, both in speed and duration. Palou is just nuts and that was generally enough to ensure he'd stay out for the win. His victory ties him with Gordon Johncock for 17th most wins in Indycar/USAC history. That was Palou's 104th race. Johncock raced in 262 races. ECR looked like crap. Lundgaard had a dreadful qualifying, but was able to pass himself up to about 10th for a decent finish. Poor Armstrong, 3rd race in 4 that saw his engine go out. Quite the alternative to Rosenquist finishing 2nd.

Onto Markham, Ontario for the next race. Veekay podium'd there last year via fuel saving strategy. He isn't using quirks to finish higher this year.

Palou holds a 110 point lead, a fifth title seems assured. This leaves Malukus and Kirkwood to fight for second. Malukus has had a very quiet season despite fighting for second overall. Veekay is in 10th with 9th maybe being the glass ceiling unless they pull off something in Milwaukee. It'd still be his best season. Veekay could podium, but the JHR car has a lower ceiling than Ganassi.

Silly season remains silly. JHR has an option on Veekay. Ganassi has the picks of Hauger, Veekay, or maybe more likely (?) Lundgaard, who knows about an NXT driver. Ganassi was interviewed during the pre-race warmup and if Ganassi was high on signing Veekay, he sure the heck didn't emote any hints that he was.

Well, Markham has come and gone. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Literally. Friday practice didn't happen because the track wasn't ready yet.

Saturday was a day full of racing and anxiety. Fox One has been struggling to properly carry things. And drivers were getting used to a new track that had uniqueness and some... well they apparently didn't bring enough jersey barriers or a measuring tape. The hairpin was a bloody mess. Instead of a proper hairpin, it was literally just an end to the jersey barriers. This lead to major issues in the race.

The drivers acclimated to the course, some better than others. Louis Foster, of all people, perfected the lap. Blowing out just about everyone but Palou! Half second, I think. Come qualifying, it was nuts. Dale Coyne drivers were all of a sudden competitive. making the fast 12. JHR did well with Veekay who managed to slot into the Fast Six... again! The fast six included six teams with RLL winning the pole and Dennis Hauger qualifying in the top six. This is awesome!

But then the race started. And what made for great qualifying didn't make for great racing. Passing was extremely hard. Lundgaard had a slow start and that screwed over Veekay as he couldn't get by Hauger who would be losing close to a second a lap, and because they are all driving to the same fuel numbers, there is not enough speed differential, and Veekay is stuck. JHR make a bad decision to pit Veekay, so he isn't stuck behind Hauger... but the pit lane is short, they get him out in 6.6 seconds... and now he is stuck behind other cars. BLEEP!!! His race is boned. No way to get around that now. Foster was having a much better than expected race. His practice/qualifying performance was unexpectedly happening in the race. Even after the first pit stop, he came out looking good.

Then after the first yellow, Indycar started the demolition derby part of the race. A lot of it at the hairpin where there were multiple lines, but really only one exit. Cars were backing up, trying not to stall and there was lots of contact. It started looking dumb. Much more yellow than green. Foster's race would end in a pass on Ericsson in a hard hit straight into the wall. Then... about 35 laps remaining, there is a yellow. Everyone pits, except for Andretti, as they can make the finish one that last stop, with enough fuel save. The entire world slapped its forehead at the obvious stupidity of Andretti of not pitting Ericsson who was leading and Power. That was totally going to bite them in the end.

Grosjean inherits the lead after Ericsson went on a time trial and gave himself a 17 or 18 second lead on Grosjean before pitting. The race has calmed down... as everyone but Will Power and Marcus Ericsson are in fuel save mode. Grosjean is safely ahead, but then something weird happens. The Andretti cars aren't in fuel save mode, and are driver 0.5+ second faster laps. With the very short pit lane, the drop from pitting under green isn't that bad. Ericsson races forward, passing cars that are sipping fuel, and even Grosjean has to give up his spot.

The idiots in charge of Andretti turn out to the ones capable of doing math and get the race win and a third on the podium as well. Grosjean finishes in second, repeating Veekay's performance in Greater Toronto last year, that too on the alternate fuel strategy. Thanks to the demolition derby portion of the race, Veekay was able to manage a 7th place finish despite the extended fuel save (he was in 5th) and having nose cone damage from making contact on Palou's car in the hairpin.

Kirkwood crashed out, so the Championship race is a tight one for second. Palou has it all but wrapped up now with another top 5 to his credit.

A side note on Palou. He has finished in the top 5 more than 2/3's of his races. He has won more than 1/5 of his races. Podium'd about half of them. He has won 6 races this season, in what has been a 'lackluster' to some season for Palou. In all of USAC/Indycar history (going back to 1905), only 74 drivers have won 6 races or more in a career!

Meanwhile, certain people are pushing the Freedom 250 into Pit sub-forum content by insisting on being involved in all aspects of what is supposed to be about celebrating the Constitution's 250th birthday, the 250th year since winning the War of Independence, no, don't tell me, I'll get it. ...the 250th anniversary of declaring independence. It is getting tedious.

However, sounds like the course is set up, which is better than Markham was. Rain is in the forecast for tomorrow, upwards of an inch! Rain is likely 8 AM on to 2 to 5 PM. No idea if fake IROC will run in that. Indycar needs to run in the rain as this has never been run before and both practices and qualifications are Saturday.

Street courses are often the worst to go to for a racing experience. And this is taking that to the 20th degree. This is lining up to be an awful spectator event. With the rain, and almost no on track action, monitors not where grandstands are, and only partial access to the site, this is really a bad idea. It is like the two races at Thermal in Arizona, but allowing people to kind of attend. The issue of security is also a major problem and will likely lead to delays.

With rain on Saturday, that'll make things harder for the drivers to get this track down as, both, the track won't be rubber'd in (both the rain and lack of racing series on the course), and there might not be much dry track practice on the course. And then there is the issue of 147 laps (which leads into more The Pit crap)! The distance is long for a street course, only challenged by a few races in Cleveland at Burke (which is (was?) an airport where you could see most of the action from the grandstand, even with no monitors). If this track has little passing, this is going to be a long slow burn which only will have 3 to 5 concurrent pit strategies to keep people guessing who is actually best off, with pit stops possibly determined by how long it takes to catch up and be stuck behind Sting Ray Robb.

Markham ended up being some what of a spectacle, somewhat good, somewhat a joke, but ultimately compelling. Hoping for the same in DC.

The Cleveland GP at Burke was a great race, like you said the view from the grandstands was unique in being able to view most of the track and the pit entrance from our seats.

From what I've heard, Burke was hard on the back.

And speaking of hard on the back, the word "bumpy" is being brought up regarding the course in DC. Passing... one, maybe two spots. They are doing 147 laps on this course. Rain totals have dropped, but still well over half an inch. Same window for rain. Radar for forecast implies blobs of small storms to pop up. Raceday weather is looking pleasant.
