I have a VIP222 that has been experiencing loss of signal lately....just by chance I replaced the seperator with a new one....and the signal seems to be more stable. is this just co-incidence, or are these things known to go bad after a while? It's like 7 years old....do they have small electronics inside them that could go bad or has anyone ever had this happen?

It's possible for it to go bad. I have seen a few go bad. It's not a likely option for the majority, but not surprising when it happens. As far as what's on the inside. Not sure, never opened one up. Wanna be the surgeon?

Me too. Only tried a new one because a tech left one behind one time. Darned if it didn't work.

Yep they are sold on ebay all the time for decent prices too so why not try em but the odds of it being that are rare. I'd trace the line all the way back and check any and all splices and connections. Certainly if any are outside for corrosion inside as water will find a way sure enough.
