I remember it well. I was working evening shift at IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY. We got to go home early. CC ginger by candlelight was very nice! 
I remember it too. We lived in the Albany, NY area and my Dad turned his transistor radio and the only station he could pick up was somewhere in West Virginia. People came out of their houses looking to the skies certain that it was a Russian attack.
