Dude, you can't retire, you're still a youngster! I've transitioned to much more computer and phone work in the store and many fewer roofs and dishes. You don't sound like the kind of guy who would be able to just sit around.
Oh, no sitting. We're moving back to upstate NY next year. I'll find something to do. Maybe get my CDL back and find a job driving a few days a week or something

I am now in process of getting CDL. Not to go work for a trucking outfit but mainly for farm. We're down at Pekin all the time dumping grain. My brother already has his and a truck that I (or, maybe we) can use to take the test. Have you driven/been truck-licensed previously?

CDLs are in BIG demand. Ever notice how close to 100% of OTR trucks have hiring signs on them?
That's because the one good thing the administration is doing is finally going after the fake and non-domiciled CDL drivers, opening the door to hire more valid drivers and hopefully will push the rates back up.

ever notice that 90% don't last there first year? recruiters are like used car salesmen there lying when there lips are moving . the mega carriers starter companies are nothing more than CDL mills!!! they get a kickback from everyone that goes through them. freight rates are double from what they were 2-3 years ago also.. there's a goldmine in trucking right now!!!

now let's get rid of the piss tanks and tampons off of diesels aka emissions crap since it can bankrupt someone!!! and get rid of ELD'S since they make some drivers drive like idiots trying to find a parking spot. starter mega carriers should not allow new drivers to train that's just a way for em to move cheap freight..

I never did, nor would I ever drive for the mega's. They're worse than puppy mills.

And when they get rid of driver-facing cameras, they'll start to attract the prototypical truck driver back to the industry.

same here. i got my own authority right out of the door!!! i never worked for the megas a day in my life.. i bought a beater with a heater went on a load board and looked for my first load and ran it.. providing there insurance would let me run it. and most of the time it was no.. the training schools get a govt kickback for everyone one that goes through em weather they pass or flunk... got my brokers licence i can broker my own freight also. nor would i drive for the megas since they exploit you!!! i didn't spend thousands to get my cdl to be babysat and micro managed. i wouldn't put up with alot of sh*t the megas pull!!! when i started i sold the car and gave up the apt and lived life read books and podcasts on investing while driving.. ofcurse people thought i was crazy back in the the now there my best friend :)

i own my own truck i don't have none of that crap :biggrin just an outward facing cam for a**holes in 4 wheelers and the break checker's
I thought about just buying my own, but goddang. I bought a nice 2000 W900L in 2004 for $52K. New they were just over 100K. Now, a new KW W990 is over $300,000.00
I couldn't afford a new one, but used truck prices are just as crazy

This is still true to this day. The w9's are going for 235.00k to 300k!!! but goddang id''e spend it on a kitty whopper over a frieghtshacker castacrap!!! I only buy new so i can get the manual trans and delete all of the safety crap like adaptive cruise and lane departure warning and all of that crap as that will have you pulling your hair out. truck prices are still crazy today!! and in my line of work i need a 170 inch sleeper since i can't park in choke and pukes or walmarts ;). right now heavy haul is big with all of the AI data centers if your into flat bedding!!! my wife is already looking for our second truck. i just cringe when she shows me LMFAO :biggrin

My brother knows a source for lower cost used. They're automatics, if don't mind giving up shifting for self

have you tried looking for an O/O that's going into retirement? sometimes you can get a good deal and the owner will work with you as far as financing they act as the bank when your done paying it off then they give you the title. the truck along with it's depreciation are tax write off's!!!
