What does this broadband connection allow or what is it for?
Other than it looks like downloading the daily program guide and eleminating the need for a phone connection, as far as I can tell.
What else if anything does is it for?
Shared viewing between dvr's (which would be nice)?

It has nothing to do with downloading the guide info, that come from the 110 satellite. It allows for ordering PPV and DishOnDemand as well as give location info to Dish headquarters.

Currently connecting and enabling broadband allows those that don't have a landline connected to have their $5/month fee eliminated. It likely gives less accurate location info than landlines do. It also alloows for the downloading of "On Demand" content and will (hopefully) soon add the ability the program your DVR from a remote location using a computer.
