Broadcast Networks Ratings Thread

Sunday, February 4, 2007

Zap2it reports:

The Super Bowl delivered its usual gigantic audience on Sunday, though ratings for the game this year appear to be off a bit from last year's broadcast.

CBS, which carried the game, averaged a 34.6 rating/52 share in primetime Sunday (with those numbers likely to change some because of the live broadcast). Viewership was in the 86 million range, compared to 90.7 million in 2006. Just as predictably, the other networks hardly registered on the night. ABC was second at 3.0/5, followed by NBC, 2.3/4; FOX, 1.9/3; and The CW, 0.8/1.

(UPDATE: Ratings for the Super Bowl actually improved a little over last year when the nationwide live broadcast was taken into account.)

In the adults 18-49 demographic, CBS scored a 28.0 rating. ABC's 1.8 was the best of the rest. FOX averaged 1.1, NBC 1.0 and The CW 0.5.

On Saturday, CBS' drama repeats and "48 Hours" led the night with a 4.9/8. NBC was second at 4.5/8, followed closely by FOX at 4.3/7 (FOX had more total viewers). ABC trailed with a 3.1/5.

Nielsen research on DVR Users

TVWeek had the following story on DVR users...

DVR Users View Commericals in First Day, Nielsen Says
By Jon Lafayette
If a commercial is going to be seen by a viewer using a digital video recorder, its most likely they’ll see it in the first day or so after it was originally aired, according to a new analysis by The Nielsen Company....

...

Nielsen found that ratings for primetime broadcast commercials gain 16 percent in ratings among viewers 18-49 in homes with DVRS during the first 27 hours after being recorded. Over the full seven days that Nielsen measures, that figure rises to just 22 percent.

By comparison, ratings for prime time programs increase 35 percent in those first 27 hours, and rise by a total of 47 percent after seven days.

Nielsen also said that households with DVRs watch significantly less live TV than households without DVRS, but that most of that difference is made up after seven days of DVR playback. Those DVR owners are younger, better educated and have higher incomes than the average U.S. household.

For the full story, visit this link

The story I just reported on DVR watching of commercials was also reported in the NY Times, focused on the idea that DVR users watch 2/3s of the commercials.

I know its not statistically valid, but it sure as heck is NOT in my house. :) That's at least half the reason for the DVR.

Thats right we are young smart and rich! LMAO ok ok bad joke.:D :D :D

Absolutely. :D

But statistically probably very true. Given the median household income of $44K, with 150 million Americans falling under that number, its pretty likely that DVR owners are above it, and considerably more so for HD DVR owners at that.
