Hi,
I just recently bought an HD tv and I can't yet afford an HD dvd player but have heard the upconvert dvd players are also pretty good. Can anyone recommend a good and affordable upconvert dvd player?

I have heard good things about the Oppo players that are out there.

Is your HDTV poor at upconverting the DVDs you feed it? You might have little to gain by buying an upconverting DVD player.

Up until buying the xbox hddvd drive I used a samsung hd860 which worked great. They can be purchased new from ebay for $55 new or around $30 used, some with the HDMI cable.

I have the Oppo 981-HD that upconverts to 1080p. Looks fantastic on my Panasonic 1080p projector. It is $229 list but I've seen it as low as $179.

I have Sony's 400 DVD changer. It's $300 at amazon and has excellent outputs in HDMI, Composite and regular old connections. The menu is a bit odd, I use MovieCollector program and print out a list instead of the list inside the dvd changer.

It works great though and the price is right!

I just ordered a Toshiba HD-XA2 and will be selling my Oppo 981-HD for $100 plus shipping, if you are interested. It upconverts to 1080p very nicely.

Toshiba HD-A2 $199
