Can I use Slingbox to record Dish HD if my receiver does not support DVR capability

Hi,

I have a VIP222K and almost a year left on my contract. The EHD option does not work for VIP222K. So, I am struck without DVR capabilities unless I spend another $150 and sign a new contract which I don't want to do.

My question is- if I buy a Slingbox for cheap from a friend who wants to get rid of his, can I get it to record Dish programming in HD. Do, I still need to Dish to enable it for an activation fee, will I still need to pay for monthly DVR charges. If I cancel my Dish subscription and return the receiver, can I still play the recorded programming on Slingbox independently.

Sorry for so many questions. I looked at all the archives and could not find an answer or solution to my problem.

A Sling Box only sends the stream from the unit connected to it over the Internet. A sling box has NO DVR capabilities. If you want a DVR look on Ebay or Craigs list to possibly buy a used unit. Just be sure you get a unit that is wholly owned by the last end user, without any programing balance.

Currently we do not support the VIP222K for Sling. Here is a link to our site on Sling. TV Everywhere - DISH Network You could set timers in your receiver for it to go to the channel you would like to record. Then link the TV 2 out to your computer if you would like to record on that hard drive.

In order to access TV Everywhere you do need a Sling Adapter. Currently we support it on the VIP 722 and VIP 722k and the VIP 922 has it built in.

The VIP222 and VIP222K can’t support an EHD. I wish it did because that would fix the issue for him.

Your friend's slingbox IS compatible with most any receiver, including the VIP222k. It does not record as others have pointed out, it is for watching over the internet at any location, or in your house in another room from your computer.

Do a Google search on Hava or Vulkano (newer verson). They have devices similar to the Slingbox but have DVR functionality.

Thanks to all that responded. 222K sucks.

I understand that Slingbox's primary task is to stream over Network. However, I thought some of them had the DVR capability. I will now look for a wholly owned Dish DVR or a Hava/Vulkana as someone suggested.

If I do get one of those DVR boxes that I fully own, then
- Would Dish need to enable the DVR capability?
- Will there be a monthly DVR charge?
- Will I lose the recorded programming if and when I terminate Dish service down the years?

You would need to activate the receiver on your Dish Network account. If you do not currently have a DVR on your account, there will be a monthly $6.00 DVR fee. This is an account level fee, so you only pay once per account, no matter how many DVR's you have. If in the future, you deactivate your Dish Network account, you will own the receiver and you will have access to all recordings on the hard drive. Currently leased accounts lose them because the receiver has to be returned. I hope this helps!
If you purchase a Hava/Vulkana DVR, it would not effect your Dish Network account at all.

You could also get a device such as the Hauppauge HD-PVR. Using a combination of LogMeIn to remotely control the computer that the HD-PVR is connected to, and Slingbox to remotely control the DISH box, you could effectively replicate DVR functionality.
