Can you trick a PS3 to display Blu-Ray at 720P?

I have a Vizio 42" LCD that displays 1080i/720p. I just got a PS3 and noticed that the games are mainly displayed at 720P and the Blu-Ray movies at 1080i. I am looking to eventually upgrade my Vizio for a 1080p model (I'm under the old Costco return policy:) ) but for now I would like to watch my Blu-Ray movies at 720p. I've heard that Blu-Ray movies will only display at 1080p, 1080i, 480p, 480i and not 720p. I tried to uncheck 1080i on my PS3 display settings and go only with 720p and 480p but when I played a Blu-Ray movie it downcoverted the picture to 480p, not 720p. When I rechecked 1080i it did play at 1080i.

Can I check 1080p on my PS3 settings even though I have only a 720P TV and fool it to somehow downconvert the movie to display 720P? I've read that 720P is better than 1080i and would prefer 720P.

the TV itself should accomplish the downconversion if yous et it that way.

First off, your Vizio displays 720 or 1080, not both. Actually, it probably displays 1366x768 or something similar to that. It will convert any valid incoming signal to that display. Now whether the external device (PS3, etc) or the TV itself does a better job of converting is something you will have to try out. But your TV will always do at least some conversion, since the display is not a standard resolution.

Seeing a lot of 720p tv's with no 1080i
