Questions

Rodney:
How come I cannot get Turner South on the west coast?
A: Turner South has regional rights and cannot serve the west coast. We sell it where we can, you can sign up for a multi sport package, but will not get the distant pro teams.

George:
Its Baseball season why can't I see the Washington Nationals?
A: We don't like to make deals where we force customers to pay for a product they don't watch
cause we raise the price for everyone.
Scott:
Its about the MLB package, how is it going in negotiations?
A: We have always carried this, DirecTV has entered into a exclusive contract with MLB, we must match the DirecTV offer in order to provide this. MLB is not really looking like they want to deal with us. If we get the same deal as DirecTV we will offer it, if not we will not raise your prices.

Guest: Jamie Littel Nascar Pit Reporter for Espn

Question:
Gary:
Are you going to be carrying the Big 10 network in August? and will you carry the Hallmark Movie Channel? (americas top 250)
A:
Yes on the Hallmark channel in mid April, we would like to carry the Big 10 Network, if we get a fair deal we will carry it..

Winner of the Espn/Dishnetwork Giveaway: John Billings, East Troy WI

A: We have always carried this, DirecTV has entered into a exclusive contract with MLB, we must match the DirecTV offer in order to provide this. MLB is not really looking like they want to deal with us. If we get the same deal as DirecTV we will offer it, if not we will not raise your prices.

How close to a direct quote is this answer. I don't have Dish anymore so I can't watch this live or DVRd.

Two points:
1) They have not "always" carried it.
2) According to the MLB press conference...If InDemand and Dish match the deal that DirecTV has, they can have the package. According to the quote, if they get the same deal as DirecTV, they'll sign up.

If an exact quote, it says:
"we must match the DirecTV offer"
and
"if we get the same deal as DirecTV, we will offer it."

Sounds like a meeting of the minds and a done deal. Congrats to Dish subs...MLB EI should be coming your way....

Dish wants MLB EI package without the saddle of the MLB network on the most basic tier. MLB says, "Do what DirecTV is doing and you can have MLB EI"
Dish says, "Nuts to that! We only want MLB IE for the same amount DirecTV is paying for JUST MLB IE"

See ya
Tony

But we know that if MLB TV is not on the basic tier, that is not the same agreement that DirecTV signed up for. I understand they have to pay a price, per sub, based on the package. So if MLB TV is on the basic tier, they'll have to pay the price, per sub, for all packages. Why can't Dish agree to the same terms as DirecTV?

Because it costs too much money and they don't want MLB TV if even one subscriber is forced to get it on a package when they didn't want the channel.

See Dish Network is a profitable company and they want to keep it that way. DirecTV has only recently gone into the black even though they have been in business for 2 years longer than Dish. Dish is still owned by the same guy that founded it. DirecTV has changed hands twice because it wasn't making money!

Accept it or not... that is the reason. $$$. Pure and simple. Dish wants things a la carte as much as possible or as little impact to the bottom line while trying to keep package prices in line.

DirecTV will pay ANY price to get exclusives at the cost of the bottom line if for no other reason than to keep that product away from its competitors. Dish would rather tow the line on prices and expenditures.

See ya
Tony

Forget MLB EI, let D* take the whole nut. Use part of the $$ that would have been spent on that to give us our HD RSNs so we can see our local teams (not just baseball) in glorious high-definition.

IMO, that, along with the offerings from FOX and ESPN would satisfy most baseball fans out there....

Charlie also said that Direct was going to get a percentage of ownership of the New MLB network in 2009 and they are not offering the same deal to Dish Network for some type of percentage ownership and he wants the same exact deal as Direct.

I was bored out of my skull waiting for some good news about programming (such as a new HD channel).

Thanks Don for your recap. It looks like CC and tech chats are winding down. That's what happens when you have nothing of substance to discuss. Disappointed not to hear Cinemax HD being offered or even questioned. Hope they offer it as a surprise.

Anyway, Dish still has the best HD lineup in the business so I shouldn't complain. I can't wait for D* to get rolling on their HD 150 so it will force Dish to get off the pot with these much requested HD channels. This is exactly why we need competition in the satellite providers. Otherwise, we'd really have crap for very high prices.

Charlie is really hyping his new NASCAR connection. Even sponsoring one of the cars who's owner also owns NESN / RedSox. I would think he'd be a little embarrassed that Dish is not carrying the NESN HD feed.

Thanks for the recap dfergie! I love being able to get the details of the show in 20 seconds rather than sleeping through the entire thing.

I agreed.... give us YES HD and SNY-HD in NY and we will be set...
