Can a member of DIRT close your Dish account or do you have to call in to close your account?

Bruce

And when you do call in to cancel ,be prepared for an offer to stay from the Loyalty department. IF you are out of contract ,they can really offer you some $$ off to stay.

It's never that easy.

They want you to call so they can put you on hold for 20 minutes and try to convince you that dish is better than whatever other service you decided to go with.

Which is exactly what every other subscription service provider does that I've dealt with. And I never waited 20 minutes with either Dish or Direct when dealing with them on the phone, nor Mediacom for that matter.

That is too bad since I don't want to discuss with anyone on the phone that can't speak English, that, whatever they offer I still can not afford. The reason why I am going to drop this September. I don't want to, I have to.......:(

I hear you! I was with Directv for 10 years. When they first came to Cleveland; it was before deregulation and it was the FIRST alternative to Adelphia cable. It was SO superior and being from Canada, I LOVED that it offered a few Canadian stations. Then the price increases and the channel line-up changes got INSANE, so I switched to a cable provider again. Wowway. OMG, was I sorry. It was cheap, but you got what you paid for. I finally went with Dish and WAS happy. Now, not so much. I've tried to cancel a few times, only to get the pot sweetened so much by their "Customer Retention" department that I stay because it seems like I'll be able to afford it.
However, I've noticed that we are barely watching the TV anymore. There are a few shows we love, but in general, it's all video games, Netflix and other streaming services. I stream a lot of TV out of Canada onto my laptop, including hockey. So why I am I paying all that money for something we aren't using? I don't WANT to cut the satellite cord. I like watching my shows when they come out, but 4 boys and 1 me equals not a lot of income. So what I have, I need to spend wisely.
I need to find a way to watch what we love in a way more affordable manner too.

I have to replace some cables and get my ooma box set up and port my land based number.. and dump comcast cable

it appears we will have to keep comcast internet, unless i can find a good alternative

Did you ever try to cancel?

This is true with any provider. If you want to order new service your call will be answered asap. If you need service on your existing account, you will be taken care of as not to make you want to cancel, but in an acceptable manor.

If your calling to cancel, they already lost your business most of the time. They will get to your call with the lowest priority.

I had comcast fiber service last year. Only way for me to cancel the service was to call American Express and cancel the autopay.

Basic talk voip service is another bunch of A-holes. No number to call them to cancel, had to cancel them by calling American Express and blocking the charges. Now they just send me urgent account emails every day saying I owe them $24.95 yet don't even give me a phone number to call them.

Did I ever try to cancel? You must be joking!! I cancel and switch services more often than most I suspect. Just never found it a daunting job though SiriusXM works hard to make it one!! :)

Yes, Sirius Xm does make it harder to cancel. I have been trying to cancel since 2009 or 2010 and I keep getting the 5months for $5.00 promo. It's hard to say no to $5.00 for the biggest pack.

I just stopped paying Sirus. Easiest cancellation of my life. ADT made it hard to cancel. Took me 4 months of 3 times per week calling to cancel. They kept changing my contract date until finally I submitted a BBB complaint and they come back with "oh you contract ended in November, 4 months ago... We will just waive all charges since then". Even though I got what I wanted in the end, I would never recommend that company EVER to anyone. They truly were that bad.

How'd you get that ??? Usually I always get 75 offer for 6 months for the biggest pack. When I was on the phone and cancelled last time I kept getting 30 for 6 months. I would be all over that 5.00 offer. I wish these companies would offer loyalty rewards. The longer you're with them , the bigger discount you get.

That's $5 a month for 5 months, the same as 6 for $30...

Claude, Claude, Claude....same old, same old.

Nobody should be on hold that long with Dish. There have been a few remarkably high-volume times where the wait for an account specialist was about 5-7 minutes. Mostly when the Fox takedown happened, but rarely since then. But it can happen, and it's no ploy to convince you of anything. Agents are measured by how long they spend on average per call, so there is no benefit in keeping a customer on the line, the account specialist will feel the same, no benefit unless they have a good feeling they can convince the customer to stay. People who have been doing this a while are pretty good at picking out the ones bluffin' for discounts, and those who really want to cancel.
