Certain commercials are terribly loud. Ones that come to mine are the Pro-Active acne commercial and Direct Buy. Is there a way to auto adjust the volume in the 612 receiver?

Dish Net's are just as bad. I think this won't change until all the broadcasting is digital. If this continues after the big change over I'll start calling and complaining a lot.
It's definitely gotten worse. I read somewhere that even though it sounds louder, it's not really a decibel thing, which is why the TV's or audio receiver's volume-leveler controls aren't as effective. It's apparently some technical thing they can do that enhances certain frequencies which makes the ads sound louder.
In layman's terms (and someone correct me if I am wrong), a commercial cannot be any louder than the loudest portion of the show that is airing during.
So if there are lots of high decibel explosions in the show then the commercials airing during it will be broadcast at the loudest level of that show. There is no dynamic contrast in the commercial (low whisper followed by ear shattering explosion) so the whole commercial seems extremely loud.

Over the holidays I was watching some show that Dish seemed to have all the commercials. They were loud. Dish commercials are bad offenders.
I agree, WAY too loud! I always keep the remote in hand and automatically start turning the volume down as soon as the commercials start. I travel some for work and it does not matter where or what service I watch with. They are all getting louder!

And no, there is no rule on commercial volume. The government tried to come up with one, but abandoned the effort, so it's anything goes. Whats going, I think, is viewers.

I agree, the commercials are too loud.
Think of the loudest portion of the show you were watching, (typically loud noises last a fraction of a second, example: explosion, gunshot, screaming).
Now put it into context. A continousely loud voice for 30 seconds at a time seems so loud because there is no dynamic contract, it is all 1 level, LOUD.
This has been covered in other threads and I am only paraphrasing what has been better documented elsewhere. If you really want to be an expert, go to the FCC website and look it up yourself.

That's why I DVR it and skip the commercials!!!
But I do find cablevision to be worse then E*.
Our goverment does required any expiration dates for food so why am I not surprised.
The other night when the Dish NBA Season ticket or whatever it's called spot came on I just about crapped my pants it was so loud. Its most noticeable because the audio is not DD so my Onkyo receiver picks it up as regular and switches to PLIIx and blows me out of my chair.
I think I'll patent a new way for software to skip commercials, based on commercial volume.
What you need is a VR-l volume regulator. Really works well. Insert between satellite receiver and a/v receiver. Had one for 3 years. Only drawback is it works with rca jacks only, but that is no problem if you can switch your a/v receiver to 5.1 audio when available. For stereo you cannot beat it, keeps volume equal all the time even changing channels. And you still have your normal stereo separation. One source I know of is SolidSignal .com. Just type in VR-l volume control in search and it will carry you right to it.

Billy Mays sucks and so do these loud a$$ commercials! The only thing worse is when they repeat a commercial several times or play it on every break! Its like what is the goal, to piss me off so much I will never buy your product?
