Connecting Speakers to my R15-300

Hi, I just started using a DTV R15-300 DVR and have a couple Bose (older) speakers that I would like to connect to it. I have connected one to the red and one to the white and sound does come out but it's very very soft. A buddy thinks there is a setting in the receiver some where that will have the volume on th remote control the volume coming out of the speakers but I haven't found it.

Is this possible or do I need to get a receiver?

FYI, When I connect the audio to the tv the volume is fine.

Thanks for any thoughts and time you may have to consider this.

You need a receiver, connecting the speakers directly to the d box wont work. No amplifier in the box. It works fine from the tv, because the tv has an amp built in.
