Was wondering if a good old Dish 500 will work or a old Primestar dish will work for the coolsat receiver? I am new to FTA but, not cband. New for a "old" guy. To get the USA free stuff, will I also need a rotor?

Hello and WELCOME to the SatelliteGuys.US FTA forum :welcome

You can get a few TV channels and Radio using an 18" dish.

A Primestar dish and LNBF will work for all the KU FTA signals up there!

A motor is a great idea as it will let you pick up ALL the KU satellites up there (depending on your view to the satellites) . I would not waste time motorizing a Dish 500, but a Primestar Dish will work with some modifications to remove as much weight as possible.

Thanks! you are the genius! Also, will the Primestar dish work ok if I mount a dual lnb legacy on it to get more channels? I might be stupid but, it is fun!

A lot of members simply zip tie a Dishnetwork or DirecTV LNB to the Primestar (KU) LNBF and then you would be able to get both linear and circular polarized satellites, the best of both worlds.
