Is there a way to copy recordings off a Vip622 exernal USB drive so that I can watch them on a PC or archive them to DVD? I'm looking at dumping Dish but don't want to lose some of the shows that I have DVR'd and stored on an external drive. Thanks.

Nope. Not legally anyway (and you won't be getting any illegal advice here.)

Though you can always use a DVD recorder or the likes.

The files on the EHD are encrypted for the express purpose of preventing people from copying them to their PC and burning them to disc. Also, the EHD uses Linxu partitioning and formatting, so the drive is not even accessible on a PC without additional software utilities.

It is not illegal nor is is difficult to copy the files off the EHD, HOWEVER, they are heavily encrypted with an unbroken encryption so copying them is merely and exercise in computer literacy and will be of no avail if you want to watch the programming.

Only the Dish receiver can play these files.

OH! BTY! Breaking the encryption is a federal offense, subjecting you to room and board at government expense and/or a large pecuniary deletion from your bank account.
