This came from another thread, but felt it deserved it's own.

It will be a Proton launch from Russia in late September 2009.

they just added one without D12. don't see why they couldn't add more as long as cheap malone allows it. :)

I don't see the point in launching D12 since D* hasn't shown an interest in using all of their available bandwidth. D12 will just give them more unused bandwidth or more crappy HD PPV channels. I don't know which would be worse.

I guess it can serve as an in orbit spare.

Regardless of channel addition speed, think of all the channels yet to go hd. I'm glass they are sending another up. Could be like dish and have a rag tag fleet

They can add more , I was just commenting , becuase so many are convinced they aren't adding any channels because they have limited space, and if a malfunction should occur D* would be in trouble if they Fill up D*11.

Well I don't believe this for a second myself.
I think its got more to do with Contracts with the Networks.

So you guys that think D* isn't adding much HD untill D*12 is Launched , Well By November /December 2009 you should have your HD.

I don't believe it either. D* filled up D10 before D11 launched so they weren't concerned prior to D11's launch about using up all of their available space before the next satellite went up. So now should be no different. But for whatever reason you want to believe, D* has chosen to sit on their butts and do nothing.

News Corp was in charge when D10 came on line. Liberty is in charge now. Perhaps they are more cautious.

If D10 or D11 failed, DirecTV would be in trouble. If a Dish Ku sat failed, it may be possible (albeit expensive) to rent another Ku sat for temporarily use. Same isn't true for Ka.

That might be a concern if one or two satellites were old, they are not.DirecTV bought D10/D11 and D12 at the same time.;)

Echostar 4 was a brand new satellite that went belly up.

And meteorites and other space debris don't care how old your satellite is.
