At this point you can add it to the gadzillion other rumors for years like this.
That said, there are indeed some of us who thought this could happen when At&t early on made it clear Satellite was not in their long term plans. I still feel it is like XM and Sirius. For the medium to survive they needed to merge.
The problem is that Satellite tv is a dying industry. Other than the rural areas with no competition satellite is not needed any more. You can stream everything DISH has now on Sling tv. So if Directv is merged with DISH , you just have all the satellites and customers in one company and a lot of expense to change out all the dishes and receivers etc. Then the churn would take away your bass of customers a million each year or more and you end up having a lot of useless satellites. Too bad this merger couldn't of happened years ago when they first proposed it. The future is simply not satellite or cable any longer. Streaming is the ever present and for the foreseeable future.
There is no real news here. At this point you can add it to the gadzillion other rumors for years like this.

That is easier said than done though the two systems are not at all compatible. For a merger like that to work there has to be lowered operating costs and consolidation. It would likely mean converting all Directv subscribers over to DISH equipment no small task and cost. But it could be done over time. There are different contracts in place etc and even combining the workforce wouldn't be simple. But that is possible, the combined SiriusXM did similar and now has far more subscribers than when they were separate, and provide a much better service despite the concern of there be only one satellite radio provider.
Still no quality cloud based DVR, thoughThe problem is that Satellite tv is a dying industry. Other than the rural areas with no competition satellite is not needed any more. Still another person who thinks broadband is universal - it isn't and that's been discussed numerous times here. Yes, you can stream everything Dish has now on Sling TV - if you have access to broadband. Satellite TV is changing but it is not dying. You're going to see a lot of consolidation of packages and paring of a whole lot of the garbage channels that the vast majority of viewers have no interest in. Do I think there will be a merger? Depends on whether AT&T is dumb enough to completely run DTV into the ground until there is no value left. Frankly, if I were Dish, that's what I would wish for. Much easier and cheaper to add on disgruntled DTV ex-customers as new customers than take over responsibility for all the DTV infrastructure and contracts and then have to deal with conversion of the DTV system over to the Dish system. The problem is that Satellite tv is a dying industry. Don't you need cable to supply the internet that makes streaming possible? Therefore, where cable TV might be heading the way of the dodo. The cable industry will be fine for quite some time. The problem is that Satellite tv is a dying industry. Other than the rural areas with no competition satellite is not needed any more.
