digital out to digital in

Was at someones house connecting an RCA dvd player that had a digital audio out for coax and I connected a 6ft. wire to his Sanyo LCD digital TV to the digital audio in and got no sound.

Why would that be?

BTW, I'm not referring to the dolby digital tos-link connection, its the light orange digital audio out coax connection that most dvd players have.

Guest a guess but on my receiver you have to use the remote toggle between analog and digital audio.
