Directv 1080p support

Directv is only Broadcasting in 1080i so you wont get 1080p with a directv receiver

1080P was just enabled to view 1080p ppv. The software was downloaded the other day when receivers were freezing from another glitch.

Also, it appears the 'hitting the info button during setup' is a false fix as this was just a means of telling the receiver that your picture was fine when indeed it wasn't. Similar to a computer screen pop-up that gives you a query asking if the picture is OK when changing resolutions.

Just beta stuff, were a long way off from 1080P locals, nationals.

My HDTV is 1080p "compatible" but does not display in actual 1080p - 1080i is the max resolution. What a rip off, I wish this was more clearly explained to me beofre I bought it.

anyways, check your owners manual and see if that the same with yours.

Edit: I wish I knew that before investing in my BluRay (PS3) too.

OUCH, that sucks!!!!!! On mine when playing the Blu Ray the resolution actually shows up as 1080p/24----i feel for you, i would be p*ssed!!!!!

Yeah, I see that now. It appears that the D* software will only support 1080p/24, while my set only displays 1080p/60 (is this correct?).

Will D* try to support 60fps also, or is it not worth it for them to do this?

And what about Blu-Ray? I was thinking of purchasing one since my set is "Full 1080p." If I can only display 60fps and the Blu-Ray is 24fps, will it show in 1080p on my Sony?

Damn this crap is confusing!!

bpjones,
Did you change any menu settings on your sony? Or did you just have your receiver plugged in through hdmi and it automatically read the 1080p, because i have tried all hdmi inputs and all menu settings and no luck. I am starting to lean towards the others that are saying that it just isnt ready yet...
I didn't do anything special. As they say- it just worked! I am connected via HDMI. Native mode off in HR21-100. Resolution fixed at 1080i.

It is true that right now DirecTV only does 1080p/24. If the TV only does 1080p/60, there is no workaround.

It was speculated that the Broadcom chipset in the HR2x receivers cannot decode/output 1080/60. So that could be a major limitation.

To my knowledge, there is nothing confirming that at this point, but we do know that only 1080p/24 is supported.

Wikipedia reads on 1080p and 24fps

Here:

and HDMI plus HDCP:

Obviously enough to make ones head spin.

don't most 1080p's only support 1080/60 not /24? it would be wise for D's next dvr to support this since everything else out there that does 1080p supports 60hz

The TV's are going to a 1080p/120hz standard so they can handle 24, 30, and 60 fps content with out all the mathematical gyrations. As bandwidth is limited, it makes sense D* would opt for film's 24fps original format. It is more efficient to send 24 frames per second rather than 60. 1080p takes twice the bandwidth as 1080i but by cutting it to 24fps they actually are using less than than at 1080i/60. I imagine with compression it is more complicated than that but I can understand what they are doing.

Does anyone really know that a 60hz TV won't display D* 1080p/24 content? My set does 24fps so I can't answer the question. A free 1080p test channel is sorely needed.

Trust me, it won't play (at least on my TV). My TV is only 1080P/60. The screen just goes blank when it's 1080P/24. You have to shut off the TV, and turn it back on again. Then the screen is a nice purple color (LOL) until you change the resolution to something compatible.

So, is there any actual 1080p programing? The receiver did a software download this morning and informed me that there would be 1080p programing. I went through the menu and found 1080p as a choice now and it accepted my samsung but where's the programming?

There are several movies out in 1080p on the VOD channels.
btw, if you d/l one and play it, the 720 and 1080 lights should be lit.

Hello.

I figured I would add my setup in case anyone is taking notes on all the TV/DTV Receiver configurations experiencing this problem.

I have a DirecTV receiver (HR20-100) going into my Sony stereo (STR-DG720) and then to my TV (Westinghouse TX-47F430S) all via HDMI.

Sharp Aquos LC-32d62u

So I have a Sharp Aquos 32" TV that does not seem to support D** 1080p resolutions. I hope this is something that they find a fix for, as my TV does suppor 24fps, but D** still doesn't like it.
