DIRECTV unlikely to keep NFL Sunday Ticket

You guys focus too much on sticker price and not the brand value. They don't care if you sub for 3 months and quit, because you're in a relatively small minority and many, many others will use it as an impetus to get not just ESPN+ but a bundle of some kind that includes other services like Hulu and Disney+. They also have existing Disney+ and Hulu subs they can offer it to to convert them to multiple-subscription customers.

They don't need to get their annual cost back in revenue for this to be worth it. It's an investment in subscriber intake, retention and brand value. That's why they don't have to charge an additional fee if that's the route they take with the package.

It was a pretty awful loss leader since DirecTV has lost about 7 million subs the last 5 years, the most of the Traditional Providers.

And there is no way Amazon will give away NFLST to Prime members, they have 150 million Prime household/members in the U.S. already, not many more left, if they charge $100 and get just 15% of their members to subscribe, they will break even.

15% of DirecTV subs get NFLST now, there is no reason why Amazon cannot do the same.

You keep pushing this idea that because Directv has x% of people getting NFLST that Amazon Prime will. They probably have barely that percentage of NFL fans among their subscribers, you think every NFL fan will want to subscribe to NFLST?

The majority of NFL fans live in their team's market, and wouldn't be interested in NFLST unless it was free. Some not even then.

They have been giving away NFL ST for new subs for years . And even for existing... before ATT took over I remember getting it free a few times

And you keep pushing the idea that it will not happen, there are way too many aspects of this deal that’s either of us cannot figure out yet.

I would guess that Amazon Prime has a much higher percentage of NFL fans then DirecTV does, Prime has over 150 million households/members in the US, that is the majority of the population, DirecTV has a tad over13 million, simple math would disagree with you.

I am a NFL fan who wants to subscribe to it, I just want nothing to do with DirecTV and their old equipment and way over price service ( box fees alone for me would be about $70 a month).

Based on what you wrote, then why have National Games, because a lot of people watch them nationally-

NFL television ratings for Week 8

Below are the ratings and average audience size for the nationally-broadcasted NFL games in Week 8, via SportsMediaWatch.

  • Thursday Night Football: Green Bay Packers vs. Arizona Cardinals – 20.26 million, 11.2
  • FOX Game of the Week: Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. New Orleans Saints – 21.29 million, 11.4
  • CBS: Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cleveland Browns/New England Patriots vs. Los Angeles Chargers – 17.78 million, 9.6
  • Sunday Night Football: Dallas Cowboys vs. Minnesota Vikings – 15.68 million, 8.7 rating

And how many NFL fans Amazon ( whoever) gets to subscribe will depend on the price charged.

What would amazon get out of it?

Probably a albatross wrapped around their neck

Sunday Ticket is agreat promo
But is it a profit center by itself?

I suspect hard numbers would be closer than percentages. If X subscribers of DTV pay for it, then maybe Amazon or some such could get 120% of X.

Again, Amazon does not need it for a promo to get Prime members, they already have the majority of the United States’ Population subscribing to it.

As far as making a profit, depends on the price and that will affect how many people will get it as a add on.

Again
Why does Amazon need it?
Its not profitable by itself
Its great for cable or satellite to bundle other services with it
But why spend a bundle on something that really wont do anything by itself for you

I feel like like we are going in circles with these posts.

Last time, no one knows why Amazon ( or anyone else) wants it or if it can be profitable.

The only things we know is Amazon has the most potential to make it profitable based on the massive numbers of Prime members they have.

Amazon actually has about 70 million more subs then all the Traditional Providers combined ( roughly 80 million).

The other thing we know is DirecTV/AT&T no longer wants it based on their dwindling sub numbers and the $600-up million loss they take every year on the NFLST, doubt it, find one news story that shows DirecTV wants to keep it in any form, even Roger Goodell has said it is going streaming.

The last thing we know, the NFL is going with whoever pays them the most money for Sunday Ticket.

Why would Amazon wanit it?
They won't use it as a promo
Just no profit by paying a gazillion dollars for exclusive use of the Sunday Ticket unless you can bundle it with other services and make a profit that way

Disney would bundle with ESPN+

Cable would bundle with internet and cable service

NBC would bundle with Peacock

But Amazon has no use for it

Amazon didn't need to get into the TV business either. They did and they make money off of it.

Why would Amazon pay $1B per year for exclusive Thursday night games starting in 2023? Do you not think the second richest man on earth knows what he’s doing?

Amazon could cut a deal for a stsnd alone sunday ticket app..get a cut from the proceeds

But they should CHARGE the NFL for that...not PAY for the privilege

Simple math obviously disagrees with you, because you don't seem to understand how percentages work. Even if every single household subscribed to Prime it wouldn't have a higher percentage of NFL fans than Directv. It would have a higher NUMBER of fans, sure.

But as the only place to get NFLST, many of the people who want it badly enough already subscribe to Directv. All there is to argue is "how many people who want NFLST but can't or won't subscribe to Directv are out there". You seem to think there are 13 million such people. I find that laughable. Why have so many people chosen not to get Directv if they want NFLST? Well over half the population can get it if they want, so at best they'd probably double Directv's total if they kept the price in the same ballpark.

If they offer it for less money they will increase that number, but no way they can get it to 15 million. And that wouldn't be enough at $100 to pay for it. Directv is currently paying $1.5 billion a year, the NFL will want at least $2 billion a year on renewal because they always want more money than they got the last time.
