I'm rather new here, getting Dish installed today and I expected to get a Dish 500 and instead he has a Dish 1000.

What's the difference (if any) and any advantages or disadvantages?

Thanks in advance.

They will prob install a dish 1000. The dish 1000, in addition to other things, will allow you to view ALL the HD channels. You would miss out on one satellite with the dish500. I have a dish500, which is being replaced with a 1000 on sunday when i upgrade to HD.

Dish 1000 can see three orbital slots (satellites). It sees 110, 119 and 129.
Dish 500 can see two orbital slots. It sees 110 and 119.

If you are interested in HD you want the 1000. Most of the newer HD channels are beamed from 129.

also some locals are on 129 too...but since the OP didnt give us his location (or what locals he gets on Dish) we cant tell :)
