Dish channel line up vs AT&T U-Verse channel line up

Keep your Dish account on the lowest package, get Uverse and make sure the technician doesn't get lazy and use you Dish coax, I think the only thing you will miss from Dish is the DVR but Uverse isn't as bad as people make it out to be, really its a great service, just as Dish... but everyone has different tastes so Uverse may be better for you, if not, Uverse doesn't do contracts-just cancel it.

oh wow, I really thought the receivers were all connected by cat5e/wireless and the gateway! Shows what I know!

U-verse can use coax, it's called HomePNA, however it's VERY finicky and prone to problems if barrel connectors aren't tight, end connectors aren't properly spliced, etc. Cat5 would be less prone to problems. As for wireless, there are ways to have U-verse TV via wireless, but they are for the most part unsupported by AT&T.

3HaloODST, will they use my existing coax system or my wired network? I have a 4 year old house that has one of those centralized wiring boxes ( in master closet). I have ethernet connections by every TV location and then some. Thank you very much for your informative answers and help in this thread!

I have given strong consideration to U-verse, when it becomes available in my area. But currently, Dish has several channels I like that U-verse does not offer. So, if U-verse became available to me today, I'd stick with Dish. A friend of mine - who has U-verse - agrees that he misses some channels he used to have with DirecTV. However, he did not have any complaints about sluggish (buffering) video or the DVR technology.

They will most likely try to use the coax unless otherwise specified. Especially if it involved crippling a competitors coax system.

Keep us posted. Im really curious to see how it works out for you.

Please, I would also like to hear how the DVR compares, both functionally and storage wise. I have had Comcast DVR's, and currently have a Dish DVR (ViP 922 and ViP 211k w/EHD 1 TB), and there is no comparison, the Dish DVR is spectacular in comparison. But I, and I assume others, would like to hear about your experiences with their DVR as compared to a Dish DVR. Thanks for the future updates!

Well, OP may very well like U-verse's DVR, but I personally hated their DVR after coming from a DISH DVR... As you said... No comparison... Their DVR is slower, clunky interface, less options, less HDD space (320GB is the max, period, vs 500GB per 722/722K, plus, DISH allows EHDs, U-verse does not.) I never looked back once I dropped U-verse TV and went back to DISH...

I am contemplating leaving Dish after 11 years and moving to another service.

Is there a website that I can go to that has a comparison of what all the TV services have over the other?

Thank you!

Personally I thought of doing the same, but spent a good deal of time and the ATT store that had real liveUVerse and was not impressed. The tuner lag for changing channel and paging through menus was noticably slowethanDish and their HD had obvious frequent macro-blocking. They can't get enough bandwidth through that crappy twisted pair coming to your home so they'll always have lesser PQ.

Wow, what a morning! Today between 9am to 11am, U-verse was supposed to be installed in my house. 11 am came and went. Nothing. I called a 800 number that the sales rep left me in case anything happened before the install. The number he left was for the UPS Store. The other number he labeled "direct support." That number was disconnected.

So I looked at the order confirmation letter and it had a 800 number ending in 2020. So I called. It was 11:06 am. After about 20 minutes the CSR was able to tell me that there may be an issue with my install and she would forward me to level 2 support.

Level 2 support explained that they were having an issue with my current DSL service. He asked me what company I had service with. I replied AT&T. He seemed confused at my answer. He said that they couldn't install U-verse until I cancelled my current DSL service. I said why can't THEY do that since it is through AT&T. After having said that I immediately thought he would answer with: "that's another department" Lo and behold he said, "I know that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense but that is another department."

After some conversation that I don't feel the need to repeat here, I asked to be transferred to someone else who could cancel my order.

Here comes a retention specialist. After some conversation with this rep I find out that my AT&T DSL service was not through AT&T but through another company but billed through AT&T. Man, say all that 5 times as fast as you can.

The rep pleaded with me to hang on as he investigated the issue further and he or another rep would call me back.

Stay tuned...

Btw, I was off the phone 12:23pm

I had U-Verse service for 1 month in my home and was able to compare their DVR and service side-by-side with Dish for that time. After the month was over I decided that the channel selection, price, and especially the DVR was superior with Dish so I canceled the U-Verse TV service.

I kept the U-Verse internet service though, as it was cheaper and FAR faster than the Time Warner cable modem service I had been having. The deal with AT&T was that I would get $250 to try out their service for a month and I could cancel the TV and/or internet service after 30 days with no obligation. They sent sales people door-to-door in my neighborhood to make that offer, so they targeted my area for some reason. After paying for the U-Verse TV/internet service for 1 month, I canceled and made a huge net profit since 1 month of TV service is far less than $250.

They work areas that they just put in new service for and offer big deals to come on board. That is why they showed up at your door.

That makes sense. I should clarify my last post and mention that I canceled the TV service but still have and like the U-Verse internet service.

Wish they would get that expanded to where I live. I know it's close as a house a couple of doors down when I was looking at places had an installer for U-verse & they had it. But whenever I look on line I'm told no available. Right now have AT&T DSL. That and a crappy cable co are the only things for net here.

Yeah I still have U-verse Internet after dropping the crappy TV over a year ago, and while I don't like that it's interleaved (first hop ping is 20ms vs 6ms for cable/fastpath DSL,) the 24/3 will get me by for now, at least until AT&T gets the caps going, then I'll just switch to Charter 60/5 which is still capped but the cap is twice as high as AT&T and they don't charge overages.

UPDATE: In case anyone wanted to know. Here's the latest...

I received an automated call on Monday night asking me to basically rate the service I received when I called after the installer(s) never showed up. Needless to say I nearly wore out the #1 key on the handset. One of those 1's apparently filed a complaint to AT&T because I received a call on Tuesday evening from a Mrs. Lane calling from the "executive office."

But first, let me tell you about the phone call I received Tuesday morning. I received a call from a lady who identified herself as Mrs. Johnson of AT&T U-verse and she wanted to update me on the status of my order. She gave me the date of Oct 7 to disconnect my ADSL service and Oct 14 to install U-verse. At first I explained that I didn't want the service anymore. If anything I was waiting on a call to explain to me WHY they couldn't install. That's when she began to tell me that they have to have one technician go in and removed my ADSL service before the U-verse tech could go in and do their thing. So then I asked her if it was customary to disconnect customers from their Internet service A WHOLE WEEK before their install date? I mean are they seriously making people lose their Internet for at least 7 days. Who can go that long without access especially when one works out of the home?
After some long conversation, I received a ADSL disconnect date on the 13th. Of course I had to agree to continue my original order.
I have got to be crazy to think that this will go smoothly, right. I mean once I'm disconnected from the Internet, I will be back on the next day, right?

Now about that call from the "executive office."

Mrs. Lane was calling me because I filed a complaint during that automated call. So I explained everything in detail of what happened on Sept 30. Plus I added why doesn't someone do a sort of pre-install to make sure that there will be no issues during MY install time. I mean is it too much to ask to have installers come in and install you on the date THEY give you?
She waived my activation fee and gave me a $50 credit off my first bill.

So now the wait for the 13th/14th and hoping everything goes smoothly... Right?

Hope you own your own DSL modem. You may need it. I say that as so far all of this has been nothing but L. I do want to hear how it goes though and heow it compares.
