DISH Has Made it Impossible to be a VIP211k Owner

What a bunch of shysters. Sock the charges to you, back off if you complain whilst figuring most will just pay.

They (hoppers) are for a single screen. Add a screen, add a box. Until maybe you have half a dozen

Yep, they should follow the same "no-haggle" sales technique of Saturn. ;)

I'm not fond of haggling myself, but car dealers, TV providers, internet providers, jewelry stores, alarm companies etc. obviously are. Its so common that some people are shocked when they call to quit and a company allows them to quit without a trip through the retention/haggling department.

As for add a screen, add a box, that's generally considered much easier than adding a cable in an existing house. I suppose Dish could be like Roku and try to get some companies to make Wally TVs, but I think that's easier for Roku with their 80 million subscribers.

You still need a wired connection back to hopper, right?

Saturn went out of business, evidently along with its marketing model. I remember when states were bidding against each other to get saturn for a big economic and jobs boost. Anything still happening at the saturn plant? Illinois lost out on saturn but got Diamond-Star Motors (Chrysler-Mitsubishi) as a sort of consolation prize. That eventually went down as well but is now the major Rivian plant.

I remember when one of the big car dealerships around here went to what was called a "one price" model, but that was several years ago and I heard nothing more after a couple years. I guess people either like or expect to haggle. And to fund salesmens' salaries.

you don't need an internet connection to the hopper though theres no on demand no ppv and none of the extra streaming channels. nor can dish remote in and no signal saver

interesting a tech told us if our internet went down the joeys went down!!! when there connected via eithernet with no coax from the hub
I could see the Joeys wouldn't be able to run Apps like Prime Video or Pandora which stream from the Internet, but data coming from the Hopper should be fine, same as using MoCA connections.

Easy enough to test if you can unplug your Internet router without causing a mass revolt at your mansion… 😉

well the streaming part is not an issue then since the mother in law don't stream. it's the sat part i was worried about :biggrin. but that was the tech that gave us the wrong joey seemed like he didn't give a sh*t nor did he want to answer our concerns let alone listen the the gf!! but that was fixed with a simple call ;)

You can run Cat5/6 from the LAN connections on the Hopper to 2 Joeys or to a switch and then to the Joeys, not fomr the hub and loss of internet has nothing to do with them working or not

The issue is that dish is deleting recordings from the external hardrive...atleast I think it is
Never had that issue and used the external HD with no problem up to the day I moved on.
Yes, Juan is correct. That is part of the issue... it's the issue that started the snowball down the hill.

Nebugeater, that's an interesting statement. So I'm gonna ask this question...

Is there anyone on here that is still using a 211k with an activated USB port, that can watch recordings that are over 60 days old?

I've pretty much already decided what I'm gonna do. But I am really curious to see if anyone answers that question... and if the answer is "yes", I'll be shocked.

As of right now, I can watch recordings over 60 days old on my VIP 211k with the external hard drive. In my previous posts in other threads, I detailed the exact days that they would stop recording, and one group was right at 60 days, but have all stopped working within 90 days. 60 days vs 90 days is probably immaterial to your question. Right now my oldest recordings I can watch are 86 days old - anything older does not work. It will be interesting when I get back from holiday travels if my oldest recordings no longer work.

Yeah, my recordings rarely even make it all the way to 60 anymore.

The dirtiest part of this whole thing IMO is... it's obvious that they are deleting the actual recording, but leaving the entry in the file allocation table.

Before you figure that out, it just looks like you still have the recordings. Then, when you go to play them, you get the error message. This seems like an obvious attempt to trick us into thinking that our hard drives must be failing. If that truly is the case (and I believe that it is), that's pretty dirty.

Yeah...with Sling, I believe the DVR lasts for 9 months and then there is a warning when there is 30 days left. I think it is similar with YouTube TV that you can only watch recordings for 9 months. In my mind, if there is some licensing agreement that Dish has with providers that only allow DVR for a certain length, it should be clear. Not just deleting the files but leaving the recording names in the list. Now...in my mind, if you record it, it should last forever - or at least as long as you have an active Dish account.

Wasn't the purpose of EHDs to add holding capacity, back-up & preserve recordings on a long scale such that if the rx goes kaput you don't lose them? Have there been any known system-initiated deletions of recordings from rx/dvr units (such as hopper and ViP)? Other than for the HD being filled up?
