I believe that without an active account, it will very quickly turn into a boat anchor. It will not boot up to the screens you need to access channels

Do you own it and it is presently activated for satellite?

If so I can tell you that when I had DISH till early 2022 or 25 years, I had my ota hooked up and owned my hopper 3 and my joeys in the bedrooms. When they turned off the satellite subscription, my TV antenna and the guide still worked for my ota channels. My joeys still worked in the bedroom to access the hard drive and watch my locals there. I could record off of them and set timers etc. But I only kept that for like 6 months and went to Sling TV for streaming after I quit DISH. So I don't know if it will still work now. But you had to keep the satellite hooked to the hopper, so it will get satellite updates and guide information.

But you could try it and see if it works for you. If not you can still get the Air TV dvr for locals and bypass the satellite. I use the Air TV Anywhere dvr that has 4 ota tuners. I can record all 4 networks like I used to do with Prime Time Anytime did with DISH. They also have 2 tuner versions and you add the external hard drive to it. You just need to add the Sling TV app and it will add your locals into their guide whether you subscribe to Sling TV for programming or not.

Try it and see. But if it doesn't work you could still do what I suggested with Air Tv to get your locals and get guide information and record them.
