You are correct sir. When I was first going with DISH in 97 after leaving Prime Star, DISH was the lowest priced provider with practically no fees other than additional receiver fees at $4.99 a month. You could get east /west coast locals and Super stations for like $8.00 a month, because no locals yet. Charlie Chats felt like it was DISH against the world in keeping prices down and cable sucked . Cable was the great "cable pig" with all their fees. Now DISH is the king of FEES that they charge ,because they can. They either don't realize that their FEES are also causing churn or they don't care. To go from NO DVR fees in the early 2000's to $15.00 for the hopper and $17.00 for an additional 622/722/722k receiver is nothing short of highway robbery. IF DISH would reduce the price of their many fees and make joeys a one time purchase , that you could then avoid the extra $7.00 fee, I think that they would attract new subs and retain existing and would see many more subs want the hopper3. It shouldn't cost you up to $36.00 a month just so you can get an additional receivers in 3 rooms and pay a dvr fee.

Dish tried the NO DVR fee approach and it was a failure.

The point of the DVR was to have a more stickier customer.

However when Dish launched the model 501, the idea was to charge a 1 time $50 FEE for the actual DVR with no recurring fees.

The whole issue was that people are so dam cheap, they where not spending the initial $50, so Dish switched to the FREE DVR model, and just collected a $4.99 DVR fee which was a success.

On SatelliteGuys, we get it. We would gladly pay a one time fee. The rest of the public are a penny wise and a pound foolish.

I was at Waffle House the other day, and I ordered one of their breakfasts. I love eggs, but I told the waitress they do not digest well, so I wanted to do a waffle, ham and bacon. She started arguing with me that I can't substitute eggs for another meat.

I said to her, this is what I want, figure out how to put it on the order and CHARGE ME, I don't care if it costs extra.

Then she was all nice to me, and even found me a coupon for my meal.

Point here are people are cheap, and don't want to pay for anything. The waitress in this case was so used to people for trying to get something for free, by substituting this for that, that it was shocking that someone would not argue and just ask to be charged for something.

You're right, I remember people wouldn't spend the $50 (one time fee) to upgrade to a 501 on DHA but happily paid $5/mo for a 510. I remember taking the first 501 that came in home with me, I thought it was the greatest thing ever - it changed how I watch TV to this day.

Here is an even better one.

I had a time Warner customer want a 4 room whole home DVR triple play for $150 with a free install.

Couldn't find the promotion, but found a better one for $140 with a $50 install.

After spending an hour setting it up with a different department because the promo wasn't in the system, she called me incompetent, and every name in the book. Then cancelled the order because the install was not free like she was promised by someone else.

Then the next day she placed the same order direct with Customer service and paid the extra $10 and made a formal complaint on me and my company.

I actually got paid anyways because I had the order placed first.

But just goes to show how stupid people are.

Love the hopper 3 too, but between the high programming costs and the additional receiver fees , it has simply gotten out of hand. The Flex pack looked to me like the way to solve some of the problems ,but now the rumor is that the Flex pack is going away. So I guess I am either going back to asking for credits on my bill to stay with them or I will finally leave once the 2 year price freeze commitment is up. Paying more than a $100.00 a month for satellite is out of the question. There needs to be away to drop or reduce the many fees, that might compensate for some of the programming increases , to keep my bill below that amount. DISH needs to do something to address it or they will continue to suffer from churn and cord cutting. I see DISH dropping below 13 million subs this year at the rate that they are bleeding subs.

I remember the days when the Americas Everything pack (all the channels and premiums) were around $80 a month. Without promotions these prices are just ridiculous, some people pay close to $160 a month (double) for the same thing these days without discounts.

Soon it would be the new norm paying $200 for TV.
Hopefully by then PSVue and other competitors expand their offerings and improve their quality.

Yep, can't believe some of these people, they just don't understand stuff or have the patience for it, then they end up paying for it in the long run.

I agree. These TV ads Sprint runs claiming that the Big 4 carriers are all within 1% of each other are completely bogus. Try living 45 minutes or an hour outside any major city in this country and see if TMO coverage is the same as VZW or ATT! They just do not have as many cells on as many towers in as many places, period.
Pay close attention. The Sprint ads say they are within 1% of the network RELIABILITY of Verizon, not coverage. So not only do they not have have as good of coverage, but they're not as reliable (but close).

:clappingMy experience exactly. My goofy non-tech family refused to use the extra trick play buttons on the remote, at first. But then after a week or two, they realized the error of their ways and embraced the DVR as I had. :D It didn't just change how we all watch TV, it made watching TV possible despite all the GD commercials. Sometimes I go on vacation where their TV service has no DVR capability. What a wasteland commercial TV has become. :p How can anybody watch it?

Until I started using a dvr and fast forwarding through commercials, I didn't realize how long they were. Even on mainstream programs, it's not unusual to see commercial breaks of four or five minutes. I can remember when commercials were either 30 or 60 seconds.

I remember at one time , you could have AEP and have three 722 receivers and the extra Dvr fees were FREE on the additional dvrs because you had the AEP. Back then the additional receiver fees were like $5.00 for an sd receiver and $6.00 for an additional Hd receiver. Then they did away with that perk and wanted $17.00 per additional dvr reciever like the 722 back in 2010. I had to get rid of two of those receivers to escape the extra fees: $24.00 a month for extra two 722 receiviers. Most of the time my choices have been limited because of the extra FEEs that DISH chooses to charge and when they choose to change it. The saddest thing of all is that I have always Owned all my receivers since I started with DISH going back to 97. Seems like they should give you a discount for owning your receivers ,but they don't.

I remember buying gasoline for 15 cents per gallon. I remember when True Detective magazine was considered pornography (at least in my adolescent mind).

You can be so insightful at times... What happens the other times? :biggrin:biggrin

I never understood that either, my gramps owned his receivers but never received a discount for it.
I remember my parents dumping Dish for Charter in the early 2000s then going to Directv because charter even back then kind of sucked lol.

Common misconception of what the DVR fee is. DISH does not have a separate lease fee If you have one non-DVR DISH owned receiver on your account you will see there are no fees for that receiver because there is no lease fee. So the DVR fee covers the use of their software to make the receiver do "DVR things." lol. If you own the receiver you can keep it but you lose most or all of the DVR functions and some other uses when you end your subscription. So there is no discount to be had just because you own the receiver because you are still using their software and therefore paying for use of it. In the Cable world you can decide not to pay their DVR or receiver fees and get a TIVO then pay their DVR fee every month or pay one big lump amount one time. All in addition to paying $200 and up just for the receiver. So you are still paying for using someone's software.
