Have a friend who wants to add a EX HD to his older system. He called Dish and they transferred him to an upper level teck and the teck told him his unit will not work with an EX and if it did he had to buy the ex from Dish he couldn't use the one he purchased elsewhere. He called back and asked for sure which unit does he have(he cant find the number) and they said 625. Is this a good number,as I only see questions about 622s. The second teck told him that he could use his own EX HD,as Dish doesn't sell them, but his receiver is too old to use an EX HD. If this is true,is there any way he can save his recordings on his hardrive,as he would like to update to a 722. Thanks

The EHD option was never added to the 625, so the Dish CSR was right. The only supported way of getting data off a 625 via USB is to move it to the discontinued PocketDish. Other possibilities are (if your friend owns the 625) to use a program called Dishrip on the internal disk, or any TV tuner or DVD recorder video capture to make a digital (PC) copy. Of course any of those possibilities puts the videos out of reach of the 722. :(

625 does not support external Hard Drives and the only way to save to a hard drive is to use a video capture and record in real time.

On a past Tech Forum, Dan stated that the SD 522/625 were USB 1.0 and would not allow for high-speed transfer (it would be close to real-time), and that they had NO PLANS to add external HDD feature to these models. So, external HDD is available on HD (ViP's) boxes ONLY.

Two years ago last October I was told that they were going to activate the EHD option on the 625. So for Christmas that year we bought Grandma an EHD for her always full 625. When I went to activate it, I was told that option was not on the 625. I had a Field Super check my account and what was said and he said the person that told me that was no longer with the company and that the EHD firmware for the 625 was never rolled out. The drive got used elsewhere with no problem.
