Dish Network HD Locals quality?

From my understanding they're sending the same thing over the fiber that they are OTA, so it will be the original mpeg2 signal - so it will be susceptable to all the recompression degradation mentioned before.

I guess the point of my post was that Dish starts with the same signal we (OTA) do.

Exactly. Don't we all wish that Dish would send out the signal in the same quality as what they are receiving. That would be great wouldn't it. Bottom line is Dish's HD locals will NEVER look as good as what is being sent out via OTA broadcast. They will always do addition compression on the signal.

Whats the capacity of a single transponder? Would Dish even be capable of sending out full 19.3 mbps for every channel, even if they had 100 sattelites in the sky?

A transponder with 8PSK at Dish's settings is around 39.6 Mbit/sec. Voom used to run them higher. That is why VOOM had more rain fade issues.

The network feed already comes MPEG-2 compressed. Some stations compress it more to carry more subchannels.
