Today I received a phone call from what my caller ID showed as DISH Network.

The broken Indian accent told me that Dish had installed new satellites and they had to verify my receiver would work with them. He asked "Are you watching TV right now?" I answered "Yes."

The scammer then asked me to hit the menu button twice, and asked me for my Receiver ID and my Smart Card ID.

At that I told them I don't feel comfortable giving you this information. He then said "We are Dish, look at your caller ID and it will show you our number." I then said "If your Dish you already have that information."

He tried again, by telling me that they were just trying to keep me from having interrupted service and need this information to verify my software was compatible, and if not they would upgrade our software.

I hung up called Dish and reported it. I found out that this has been going on recently. What they do is get your information, then call Dish and use the equipment number to do a move and set up new equipment under your name at a new address.

Just wanted everyone to know DON'T give any information out if you get a call from Dish, if you do you might be sorry.

When I called and told Dish, they said they would email the customers. If it's anything like Netflix on the 4K Joey then it may be awhile.

Also: Recently I had my 4K Joey removed from my account twice, and I had to call Dish to get it re-activated. I now wonder if it had anything to do with the SCAM? I did update my account, change PW, Login, and security questions just to be safe.

Problem is, way too many fall for it because otherwise, they wouldn't keep doing this. This "scam" has been going on for years, so it still works on plenty of people.

I still see emails from some Prince in Africa that has several million dollars that he want to give to me, so he can move it to the United States. Of course, he needs your bank account number for the transfer. Wow! People still fall for this and it has been around for years. For so many years that it used to be letters in the mail, since there was no internet at that time.

If in doubt, always best to say thanks and state you will call THEM back (them being the legitimate entity using their publically published phone number). After all, any CSR from any legitmate entity (utility, ISP, CableTV, etc) can pull up an account and see any remarks on them. If the call is legitimate, they person on the other end of the phone will say that is fine. If, instead, they implore you to give info now, you know it is a SCAM!

I had some family of mine getting pestered from whom they thought was Dish, and they called me to ask if it was for real. I told them to not give any info out and just call Dish at their 800 number. Sure enough, Dish had no record of any reason to call.

Does Dish still call verifying the number of receivers?
That's what I thought op was talking about until he mentioned the new dish install.
Scary.

Heck, Dish does not have records of previous offers or conversations you had with them at times when you legitimately call them.

You mean the "audit" group ? I thought they ask for a number that's auto-generated on intervals and shown on the System Info screen. But that brings up a good point - if Dish preaches "we'll never call and ask you for info", why should people believe these calls are legitimate?

That's the rep's fault - odds are they didn't enter it. I have been made offers that reps were able to see later.

Agreed, I have installed for years and used them for years, 95% of the time there were always notes of previous calls. If it is not there it didn't get entered.

I have received two of these SCAM calls in the last 2 weeks. One yesterday. Caller ID said ECHOSTAR and the phone number was dish's number. Woman with an Indian accent asked me if I was a dish customer. I said "You called me". She replied "Then you are a dish customer". I again said "You called me". At that point she wouldn't say anything more so I hung up and called DISH to inform them There is really nothing they can do. It is really easy to spoof caller ID and number. But as I understand, DISH does not call you. Don't give them any information they are trying to clone your smart card.
