Dish now asking if I am still watching, and shuts off if I don’t respond

Just a bit of paranoia.

Is it possible that DISH is selling viewing data and they need to verify people are actually watching.

Guaranteed that DISH is selling it's viewing data! How do you think shows are rated and how many people they know turned into a show? In the old days Neilson just to wire up hard wired devices to pay people to tell them what they watched. Today, what you stream, what you watch, what you record and watch later are all tallied.

There is a difference between watching a show live and watching a recorded show later. The networks and producers really care because they check if you are watching something else, you must like it better than the one you just recorded for later. Hence, current watching = higher rating, watch later = lower rating, did not watch (simple math of total in use time - shows watched time) = much lower rated show and gets cancelled.

Dish, Spectrum, DirectTV, Netflix, Paramount, etc. etc. etc. all track what shows are being streamed and watched and by how many people and what time of the day.
