I have had a couple of different promos show up since my first 501. No big deal, just delete.

They've been averaging about 1 program a quarter. Much ado about nothing..... Hey the last time it was the actresses from Las Vegas pitching the NBC fall lineup... I actually watched the thing.

What they SHOULD do is start revolving the content on channel 101. I'd watch it if it was like the old Laurie Farkas channel, where they would have relevant E* news (That's how I found out about DBSForums originally). Now it is nothing but a channel for extremely new subscribers or those with severe difficulties with reading a manual.

This you can delete. I am sure from what has been stated here befoer that it cannot delete or override recorded programs. I have 2 508's and it was on one and not the other. The one that it was on had only about 10 hr on it recorded. THe other had less than an hour of space left and programs schedualed to record in less than 24 hours. It did not record on this one. Not sure if that is the reason but it is my guess.

Now if you wnat to get in a uproar over adds you can do nothing about, how about add / product placements in Movies and TV shows that you are watching? This is what bugs me.

spam, Spam, SPAM

In around three (?) years with 508's, I can remember one (?) unwanted recording.
It's possible there were others that I assumed came about due to program changes and the promised NBR never being implemented.
(Years overdue!)

But one or many, let's call it by its real name.
Spam by any other name is still SPAM.
Stop appologizing for Dish and get after them.

An info channel that is really informative would certainly be step in the right direction.
101 is a useless waste of bandwidth, to all but the newest member.
That said, I have a weekly timer set to Monday night to capture the Charlie/Tech Chat.
Yes, there are three recordings a month I toss out, but at least I get the one I want to see.
But that timer was my choice, not theirs!

So, are you saying this promo was recorded to the VOD partition on my HDD?

A little different then the VOD partition on the 625, but the same concept. All of our DVRs have some extra space on them that is not available for standard recordings and when dish does something like this, it doesn't take away from your overall DVR space. It comes flagged to not decrement your time remaining counter.

I have a 510 and it was on mine yesterday too... I just deleted the thing... Actually there was another one back the end of summer that was a 30 minute promo for the upcoming seaon of NBC that Dish put on there too....

In all seriousness, can you point me in the direction of some documentation to support this idea? Thanks.

Well I agree w/ the OP. If I am paying for my receiver, lease or purchase it should record what I want it to record not what the original seller/leaser? (lessor?)sp wants my reeiver to record.
If I lease a car is it ok for the dealer to drive it even if it s just for 5 miles & only when I am asleep? I don't think so.
If 5 minutes is OK for everyone for E* to put an informical on their DVR without their permission when does it not become OK fo E* to0 put an informical on their DVR? 6 minutes? 30 minutes? 5 hours?
I can not believe everyones response so far has been roll over and take it.
I have no tollerance for sh*t like this.

Then I guess you should go to someone else for you programming. It's not like they are downloading porn to your system. They are not requiring you to watch it. They don't lock you system until you sit through the thing, they put it on your system for you to watch if you so choose, if not, then you are free to DELETE!

"keeps your bill low" ?
I dont think anyone claimed that.

As a matter of fact, after spending more money on a PVR, now they want to collect even more to use it!
Go figure.

I hit the delete option and they were quickly gone from the hard disk. It's kind of cheesy, but I can't say I mind too much. Idea: how about using this format to deliver useful news and information (with useful being the operative word):

* Channel Information - what's new, what has gone away.
* Charlie Chat Recap - condense 60 minutes of babbly down to 2 minutes of useful information.
* Tech Chat Recap - same as above.
* MPEG-4 rollout plans - upcoming HD LIL info for those affected.
* Hardware promotions
* Programming promotions and free previews

Again, this would be quite useful information, but does it need to be planted on the HDD. Wouldn't a better option to put it on the "info" channel?
I think a lot of you are missing my point, and perhaps I was a little inflammatory for which I apologize. It's not that the 6 minute promo was an "inconvenience" (it was quite easily deleted). It is intrusive. It sets a precident (at least for me). I do not want E* to even start to move in this direction. It needs to be acknowledged that there are customers out there that have been loyal for years, buying their products and programming, and referring others without having to have a dangling carrot.

I got the same promo inquestion downloaded onto my dvr on the 14th, I deleted it and moved on, I also got 2 clubdish cards that I hadnt requested that have numbers on them for employee's and if activated I get $75 credits from each card activated as an employee. The clubdish cards for employee's are part of a program called "no excuses", heres a bit of an excerpt from the letter.

Dear ( insert name here )

Echostar not only values you as an employee, but also as a dishn network customer. As you know, we currently offer a program called clubdish to reward our customers who make referals. In the spirit of this holiday season, we'll be offering even more rewards exclusively to our echostar employees.

Thats because echostar has rolled out its "No Excuses" campaign to help us reach our goal of 12 million. Since you play a critical role in meeting that goal, we're providing additional incentives when you refer others to dish network services. Beginning in early december, in addtion to regular clubdish rewards you'll receive a $20 cash bonus for any referrals that result in activations by dec 31, 2005 [maximum of two referrals or $40] and your name will be entered into a drawing for one of 25 pocket dishes. The more referrals the better chance you have of winning.

Personaly I dont like the label on the promo for employee's, its like we are being treated as children, I dont like the implications behind it but then again maybe Im reading to much into it. Either way its a promo that I can toss out if I want to or take advantage of and for the chance at a pocket dish and some cash and paying even less on my programing.

Actually Dish network didn't drive your dvr 5 miles either... they just put an advertisement on it.

Next time you look at your car, check it out, I'd bet that the dealership, just like dish, put an advertisement on it. Those car dealership advertisements sometimes come in the form of license plate holders, and sometimes stickers with their name and phone number that is placed on your new beautiful car. ---AND IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO REMOVE THESE WITHOUT MESSING UP THE PAINT!(more damaging than a 5 minute recording that can be deleted in 1 push of a button)

Dish has no right to download anything to your box without your permission. Whether it's bothersome or uninformative or whatever is completely irrelevant. It is spam. If they have you the OPTION of getting it, that would be fine. Anything else is spam.

and I handle it just like I do to the crap that comes into my email box at home and at the office, or in my mailbox even, it's called delete and throw away. Man, out of all the violations (have you read the patriot act lately) out there on each and everyone of us, and this is what is sending you all over the edge?? Seems we are all "rolling over" for a lot bigger invasions that a six minute "DELETABLE" bit of "mail"! At least with this, you have the choice whether to watch it or not!
