i have a friend who just had this installed today. the tech could not get the computer to connect to the internet. he left a phone number for them to call to have somebody else come out to try and get it to work. they are going from dial up to this, would the tech have to remove the dial up modem physically to get it to work?

Shouldn't have-to. At bare minimum a reboot after settings are verified, but once "broadband" is available most PC's look to it automatically. Depending on the OS, it could be as simple as "making a new connection" or similar, (what is it today, "connect to a network?") and pointing the system TO the ethernet or USB input from the satellite modem.

Disconnect the phone line and make sure the modem is not trying to dial out automatically.
Then call Dish directly.
They will confirm that the modem was properly installed, provisioned and activated.
