Do I need the Sling Adaptor with VIP 622/SlingLink TURBO W1 setup?

Sling adapter doesn't work with 622,or 612.

That raises the following question. Can you hook up a Sling Adapter to a HwS or a 922 and get it to work alongside the built-in?

Was asked before and the answer is no.

But a full up Sling Box could be made to work. At far more cost than the incremental improvement it provides is worth.
