Do I want Dish to access my receiver?

really???????
When did they add the ability to transmit back to the satellite?

Tampa8 said dish can access it via satellite. Never said the rcvr/customer could access dish via satellite.

I have rolled on several Service Calls when Dish called the customer and scheduled a Tech visit for low signal strengths. About half of those, the customer wasn't aware that they were having a problem. but grateful, nonetheless.

I've been to probably over 1000 service calls, had 1 person tell me that Dish contacted them. lets say 2/3's of those were real deal issue service calls that could have been diagnosed via phone line...

I dont buy it. Sorry.

Frank, I've been on over 3000 service calls and I have no doubt that's what happened. Why would the customer lie?

Gee whiz,
I could care less if Dish was watching. The only time you should be concerned would be if you were doing something you should not be doing with the equipment. If they do collect info and sell it to third party places, maybe it would help Dish keep the rates down. I can pitch "stuff" in the mail I don't care about and I have never had a telemarketer call me on my Skype line in over 5 years.
I have not been with Dish very long, but from what I have read and seen, it looks like an OK company to me. If they want to collect info, go for it!

RT.

So.. ever seen the movie Red Dawn? Soviet sponsored Cubans(?) invade Colorado ... etc.. the commander tells one of the people to go to town hall.. gets specific about looking for weapon registration forms .... thus they can go to people that have weapons, and get the weapons away from them.. etc..

So that's paranoia... yup.. but at the same time ... do you want dish keeping track of having rented Porn Pixies 13 - Midgets get crazy ... forteen times in one month? And would you want that kind of information used to market additional porn PPV to you? What if your kids were in front of the TV and happened to hit on one of those "forced downloads" of inappropriate ad material? (yeah yeah.. dish doesn't do that.. *at least not yet*)

The potential for abuse is there.. take the laptop theft software that was installed on those school laptops in ?Ohio? .... trusted employees accessed the video cameras on those laptops and thereby accessed inappropriate content (be it the kid smoking pot, or kids or parents in various states of undress)

and what little you know, about the people that have access to your information.

*dish* as a company didn't open up your account and see you collect porn movies on your DVR like a kid collecting marbles.. it was Johnny Q Tech wannabe ... or if you happen to be a more "famous" person... and have a rental history that gets leaked to the news (are you on the supreme court rt-cat?) ... its that the abuse of the information can be had.

As to the whole economic side of this... why should *DISH* get rich off of what *I* do? Why can't *I* get a piece of that pie? and by "keeping rates down" you're not giving enough weight to the numbers of people, or to the information's potential.

Lastly just the overall pandering of ads to me.. I already pay them 140 a month... why do I have to pay them to post ads to me? The prices they are charging aren't so much lower than anyone else out there.. so its not like they are hurting for the bottom dollar..

Now in aggragate .. I've got no real issue.. other than spread the money earned .. but it would also be nice to have a detailed accounting available 24/7 of that aggragated data that Dish is planning to give/sell to other parties ... so we can know if stuff we care about is on the chopping block.. maybe we'll ralley in time to prove the show is valuable.. etc..
