Does DIRECTV for Internet work with an antenna?

Friends, let’s be clear here. I’m talking about DIRECTV for Internet, the streaming-only version of DIRECTV. This is the package that, during various times in its life, has been called DIRECTV NOW, AT&T TV NOW, AT&T TV, and DIRECTV Stream. It’s popular with folks who don’t want, or can’t have, a satellite dish where they live. It’s the same DIRECTV programming, but it’s delivered over the internet.

Local channels on DIRECTV for Internet

Roughly 90% of the country can now get local channels delivered through DIRECTV for Internet. However, even the best-covered markets only have the “major networks” and don’t carry the independent stations or subchannels. Most areas have over 30 channels available over the air and DIRECTV only lets you see fewer than half of those.

So, will DIRECTV for Internet work with an antenna?

The answer is “kinda.”

If you use the DIRECTV app connected to a TV, you can always hook up an antenna to get those channels you’re missing. But, for those folks who use their phones or computers exclusively, that’s really not an option. Plus, it’s worth pointing out that over-the-air programs don’t appear in the guide and can’t be recorded. Some TVs let you attach a flash drive to allow you to pause live TV but that’s about the extent of what you’ll get.

It’s a shame because there seems to be more interest in antennas than ever, and the DIRECTV organization from top to bottom doesn’t seem to offer much support for this growing trend. Back in the 2000s, there was a solution for over-the-air through the DIRECTV guide, but it’s been over a decade since that went out of production. Those folks who still have the old AM-21 adapter report it works with all DIRECTV Satellite boxes, but it wouldn’t work with DIRECTV’s Gemini for Internet box.

What are your options for streaming local channels?

Unfortunately, the world of over-the-air TV is almost hostile to the idea of streaming. There have been several companies that have tried to offer live TV over streaming, even at no charge, and they’ve been shut out by lawsuits. So if you want to stream most local channels, the only option you have is to go to their web sites. Some local channels are available through free ad-supported streaming apps like Pluto and The Roku Channel as well.

Since Solid Signal is a DIRECTV and DISH dealer, I have to point something out. The Sling app, provided by DISH, does allow this sort of thing. You can hook an antenna to the DISH AirTV 2 quite easily. With it you can stream local channels to your Sling app for TV or phone. This device even allows you to connect a hard drive to allow for true DVR service. You can do this even if you are a DIRECTV customer! Best of all there is no charge for the service once you pay for the adapter.
