Droid? how to customize sounds?

Ok here is what i am wanting to do. I want to have my own sounds for email sms and mms notification. just like you can with the ringtones. i can get my ringtones anything i want including sounds i have on my sd card but i can not get those same options for email sms and mms messages. any ideas what i am doing wrong?
