Afternoon everyone. I just wanted to say that I am excited to find this thread.

I live in Northern VA and the big dogs up here are FiOs, Comcast and DirectTV. I LOVE FIOS but it is not available in the new place I am moving into. I HATE Comcast and that is what is avalible in my new place.

I saw that DTV is such a great deal so I ordered it for a bargin to be installed on June 25th 2009. My concern is that my apartment is on the west side of the building and does NOT have a clear view of the south west sky... so I am not sure if I will be able to get a singal. Does it have to point SouthWest like the DTV Techies say?

Also I am concerned about Rain Faid and other weather issues that will keep me from getting a signal... is that REALLY something to worry about?

When I get it installed I am set up for a 24 month contract which is VERY long and I want to make sure my questions are answered before I go forward with the install. I still have time to cancel so I need to know.

Thanks! :up

Go here Satellite Finder / Dish Pointing Calculator with Google Maps | DishPointer.com and enter you address and select the appropriate dish/satellite from the dropdown box. This will display a map showing the exact southwest direction you need to align to.

With a dish peaked with the highest signal possible, rain fade shouldn't be a concern. And remember when you do get rain fade it usually doesn't last that long, unless it's a really big storm rolling through.

You should check with your apartment management as to where a dish can be attached.

Ok, so I went to that Website and entered my address... but with the HUGE list of dish/satellites I did not know which one to connect to or which one DirectTV uses.

Anyone give me a heads up on which ones they use or I should select from the drop down to check ALL of the options?

BTW If they get there & cannot get you line of site, then you are no longer obligated to the 2 year contract.....AFAIK anyway...:up

Ok, looks like NONE of them are in our line of sight... I will cancel tomorrow and get my $103.95 back... damnit I really wanted DirectTV!!!

Oh well I have to go with Comcast now :(

Before you do that ....

Can they do a pole mount and possibly run around a corner to a better location ?
