Novelty antenna that works on stronger signals is made from sugar. That is a clear plastic light fixture globe filled with sugar. Called the Lutenna, you may not have heard of it. Only 23 cm in size.

Funny thing is about 10-15 years ago I recall seeing many 5' or maybe even 6' dishes mounted on balconies :) Could have even been larger hard to tell when driving by and looking up.
 
A spherical antenna was discussed here on the forum a few years ago.
Here's the site which was mentioned: FarragSat.

A Google search for "spherical satellite antenna" will get you more info, though none that's very satisfying. :)
