Customer for years with a pair of 722s off western arc. Dish (can't remember the model) had LNB with 3 eyes, one for each satellite.

Recently upgraded to H3 and Joeys. Installer used same dish, rotated to eastern arc. Replaced LNB with 2-eyed one. I remember the the eastern arc originally had 3 satellites like the western arc. Diagnostics confirm that only two are being used - 61.5 and 72 (actually 72.7 I think).

What happened to 77? Did they move everything off of it?

Hopper 3 can only use 61.5 and 72 on the Eastern Arc, not 77 at this time. Further, 77 has only been needed for a few markets when their locals were on there. Now the SD version for many HD channels is on 77 so you will notice you are not getting the SD version in many instances.

That's unfortunate. We used to loose 129 due to rain fade and could switch over to SD. Now it seems like rain fade results in "total signal loss".

They switched me to eastern since it would be "more reliable". Can the H3 handle all 3 satellites on the western arc if I ask them to switch me back?

It isn't just as issue of the EA being more reliable.

The issue comes that the duplicate SD channels are not available in all cases on the WA for the Locals that are HD on the EA. Likewise, the EA isn't carrying all the duplicate SD channels for those that are HD on the WA. You have to go where your Locals are.

I had hoped that after dropping support for the older receivers, that the transition would be for no SD Locals and every market to be HD on both Arcs.

I feel they definitely need to be doing more to squeeze more bandwidth out of their system. I've only recently come back to Dish, and maybe they've said their plans, but I don't get the end game on the Eastern Arc. They've switched to not even installing LNBs that can pick up 77w now. They should be doing the DirecTV thing and pushing towards no SD and then reclaim the bandwidth at 77w for more national HD and/or 4K, and the same thing for all of the SD space at 110/119/129

Satellite, both Dish and DirecTV, are woefully behind cable and the telcos when it comes to HD. I get that it's because cable and IPTV can introduce switched video that increases the usability of their bandwidth, but the satellite assets that both Dish and especially DirecTV with RDBS have is incredible, and if they'd invest a little money in dish repoints and replacing old set tops, they could get back to the point of having superiority over cable. Tie that with skinny bundles and they could squeeze a lot more life out of their "antiquated" linear TV assets for a long time.

I have the full Eastern Arc, including 77, and I still don't get the SD duplicates of some national channels.

You won't. There are no SD duplicates at all on Eastern arc where there are HD. The SD channels available on 77 are local channels...

Funny, I have an eastern arc 1000.2 sat dish and I also have 119 side sat plugged into it. I did that to get the software updates faster , when I was an early software tester years ago. I get sd versions of most of national cable channels and I actually have them locked out because I don't like it to default to the sd version in rain storms. I could just unplug the 119 sat from the mix and they would all go away.

Unfortunately that will not work with the new CUI it will try to switch to the locked out channel causing the receiver to stick on the screen for you to enter the passcode. DISH really needs to fix this!!!!!!!

That's a lot of room that could be used for HD/4K. Are there even any MPEG4 compatible SD only receivers?

A lot less room than you think, probably. Even though it's MPEG4, the modulation on 77W is 16-QAM, which isn't as bandwidth efficient as 8SPK.

Yeah, but that's 80 SD channels. Ignoring transponder loading, you could easily get 20-30 HD channels out of that space, and that is more than enough to fill the glaring holes in the lineup, and it's plenty of space to add one or two 4K channels. And that's even if you left the modulation the same (I'm going off the assumption that satellite doesn't support 8PSK?)
