Is the only advantage to buying on ebay the ability to get a used or older model of DVR while buying from DirecTV will get you the latest DVR model only? Price looks the same on new.

I have a HR20-700 and wanted to add another DVR so I could try out the DVR to DVR MVR feature. I read thats only between HR20s right now but I'd imagine when CE is finished testing it will be HR2x to HR2x MVR

Go through DirecTV. There's no reason to go through Ebay, as you might be getting a stolen receiver or one that has a balance on it. If the pricing is similar you are probably leasing the one from ebay, and it's a huge pain to get one added to your account as an owned receiver anyway.

If you can find an HR20 that qualifies for a trouble-free outright purchase on eBay, you may be able to avoid an extended commitment. The problem, as JosephB points out, is finding one that is truly "owned" and getting it activated as such.
