I am thinking my EHD may be failing, but I want to check to see if there could be anything else. Over the past few days when a recorded show is turned on all it shows is a blank screen and the timer reduces down by itself. When I go back and try it again it shows the recorded show has been watched already.

Is this happening with only newer recorded content or when trying to view any recording from the EHD? -Jasmine D.

It has happened on new and old recordings. It does not happen on all of the recordings. It also does not happen on the same channel.
That is certainly strange! Sometimes this can happen is there is a weak signal during to recording, but that does seem pretty unlikely since it's impacting both new and old. Is your EHD connected to your Wally or your Hopper? -Caleb S

Thank you for the clarification, reubenray! Do you happen to know how long you've been experiencing this issue? -- Jake B

It started happening just a few days ago. Another issue started yesterday where sometimes when I go from the DVR or OnDemand back to LiveTV all it gives me is a black screen. There is no volume either. I had to do a reset of the Wally to get it back working again.

My issue has gotten worse. I am now unable to watch any recording off of my EHD. The Wally shows the recordings in the main DVR menu, but when I click on something it shows "no recordings available" or it just runs and runs. It is even showing new shows are being recorded, but I cannot watch any of them. I have done several resets and hard reboots on both the Wally and EHD.

My next step to reformat the EHD, if I can figure out how to do it.

Here is a procedure for reformatting a drive with Windows.

Important:
Using these instructions will erase everything on the selected drive, and you can't undo the changes. If you have multiple drives connected to your computer, it's also recommended to disconnect them to minimize the chances of selecting the wrong partition.

You should only have your Windows boot drive (drive 0) and your old Wally drive (drive 1) connected to your PC.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
  3. Type the following command to launch DiskPart and press Enter:
diskpart

  1. Type the following command to list all the drives connected to your computer and press Enter:
list disk

  1. Type the following command to select the drive that you want to clean and press Enter:
select disk 1

In the command, make sure to replace 1 for the drive number that you want to delete. If you don't do this step correctly, you could end up wiping out the wrong drive, as such proceed with caution.

  1. Type the following command to wipe out the drive and press Enter:
clean

  1. Type the following command to confirm the drive still selected and press Enter:
list disk

Quick note: The output should include an asterisk (*) next to the selected drive.

  1. Type the following command to create a new partition on the drive and press Enter:
create partition primary

  1. Type the following command to select the new primary partition and press Enter:
select partition 1

  1. Type the following command to make the selected partition active and press Enter:
active

  1. Type the following command to format the partition using the Microsoft NTFS file system and to set a drive label, and press Enter:
format FS=NTFS label=Wally quick

  1. Type the following command to terminate DiskPart and press Enter:
exit

  1. Type the following command to terminate the command prompt and press Enter:
exit

Assuming the drive did not have any physical issues you can now you can connect the drive to your Wally and the receiver will reformat it for use as an external drive.

Is this happening when plugging in the EHD to either of the USB ports on the Wally? -Jasmine D.

This morning for whatever reason I can watch my recorded shows again.

Edit: After checking into my recorded shows about half of them are not there. When I delete the shows that are not there the percent of used space does not change. I am leaning more toward that my EHD had or has an issue. I am on the road in my RV and I always turn off the EHD before traveling. I have about a week left before getting home where at that time I may check into another EHD.

I am in another location that I cannot receive any satellites. Again the EHD does not work where we can watch recorded shows instead of the satellite feeds. The issue is not the EHD, but something with the Wally and EHD connection. I turned off and unplugged the EHD prior to traveling. The Wally shows the programs, but when I click on them nothing is there (per the Wally).

When I unplug the EHD the Wally pops up with a message that says I have unplugged the EHD and it restarts. The Wally does not recognize when I plug the EHD back in. This could be the issue, but I do not know how to resolve it.

I am back home now and I immediately raised my Winegard Trav'ler and checked the hard drive. Everything works just fine. I am of the opinion that my Wally+EHD just will not work if there is no satellite feed. I understand that is should, but after trying to watch recorded shows at several stops with no satellite feed the DVR will not work.
