Hi,
I recently had an interview for a technician position and everything went well. Sent to take a drug test and signed off on a background check. I was just wondering if anyone knew if a failure to obey traffic device from 3 years ago and a poor credit rating would disqualify me for the position.
thanks

I had a friend who applied for a customer service position at Dish (we have a Dish call center in my area), and he said he was told he was not hired due to his poor credit score.

This was a few years ago and I'm not sure what his credit score was and how it compares to yours, and not sure if it applies to technician positions or if it is still in effect.

I have no idea about Dish specifically. With so many out of work, meaning so many people to choose from businesses can be more picky. If others applied with a good credit rating it could make a difference. I am doubting one traffic ticket would make any difference.

I agree with Tampa ... a poor credit rating "generally" is a strong indicator of an individuals lack of personal responsibility which includes many things. Of course there are alway exceptions such as unexpected medical expenses, sudden loss of work, etc. Not sure what failure to obey a traffic device means but a failure to pay the fine goes to the heart of personal responsibility. I believe we all have traffic tickets!

Another thing ... if this new job requires the use of a company vehicle then your traffic issue may be important as well as the credit score. You may not be insurable for the job and I would just ask them up front.

Sorry but I think it's bs that a persons credit rating should be used with dish when applying for a job with them. I could see applying for a banker position or accountant but come on. Just like an insurance credit score is used for car insurance. Dish could hire a guy that's got a 700 credit score but he could end up having a poor work ethic. Then it makes one wonder why there's so many help wanted signs posted around at businesses? Employers have those silly tests. I got denied even an interview because when I was unemployed I tried to apply for a job at my wife's hospital because I didn't answer the way they wanted.

Not too hard to figure how this one shakes down. People with good credit scores generally want them to be included in the evaluation and people with bad credit scores generally don't. :)

So lets turn that around. I'm an employer and the decision is between two people I do not know. One has a poor credit rating and didn't answer questions the way I was looking for, the other with a decent credit rating and answered questions more towards what i was looking for.
Firefighters are hired daily based on how they answer questions to what the Employer is looking for often beating people who otherwise did better on tests.

Employers are hogtied in many other important criteria so they use what they are allowed.

Bingo! Each year for the last few years, customers would put ever greater requirements on the company where I worked before they ceased ops. Background checks became required. People with any blemish weren't allowed on the property. Insurance requirements tightened. One poor slob who was pretty good at his job, but got charged with a sexual related offense and couldn't afford a GOOD lawyer, AND got caught up with a political move by a prosecutor, got convicted. He was the third? or was it the fourth? guy this young lady charged. Inadmissible. And her rich Daddy kept pressing for convictions. And GOT them. Our (former) guy's life is pretty much ruined, for a poor choice of who to have sex with after they both got drunk. Offense? Yes. Pretty much end his chance at decent employment? WAY overboard.

And it's only going to get worse.

Well I got in a car accident when I was 18 and put the charges on credit cards due to no insurance and fell behind on payments due to a minimum wage job and other bills such as rent as priority. So bills went to collect which I gave since then paid all off. Since then I have been promoted to supervisor position due to work ability in less than 9 months of working there as well as a honorable discharge from the Marine Corp.

The only feasible reason for a credit check imo would be to make sure the employee doesn't have creditors calling all day long.

Creditors cannot "legally" call you at work. Note I said "legally." Some find a way around that, even to the point of hinting you should assist in collecting the debt, perhaps thru pay record checkage. Of course, once they have your cell #, ......

But actually, bad credit can indicate problems an employer doesn't want to deal with. In this thread's case, there is no problem and it would likely not be given a second thought, unless selection got real tight. Not likely a problem since he's looking at working for Dish.

Speaking of which, I came across a Dish hiring ad. They want somebody who can travel 60%-80% of the time across the country. Good luck with that.

I have an excellent credit score, and think it should be unlawful for prospective employers to use them as criteria for hiring decisions. It has zero bearing on one's ability to do the job well. Zero. The same goes for traffic violations, unless it is a job that includes driving a company vehicle, which a Dish tech does do.

Well sir, you are an exception. :)

Why am I an exception? I'm white, and don't think white people deserve preferential treatment in hiring. I'm a male, and don't think males deserve preferential treatment. Why would having a high credit score mean that I believe credit scores should play a role in hiring?

I modern society, the first two would be considered illegal. Why isn't the third?

My day job is HR and yes bad credit can knock you out of the process. But I have lost deals over the worst thing a DUI. Of course if you have Felonies bad credit or a DUI means nothing.

It may take a year or longer, but IF they get the info about you they don't like, you are done.
